Position Summary Colorado Network Staffing (CNS) is seeking an experienced Engineering Technician VI to support a federal rural water supply construction program based in Pierre, South Dakota. This position provides independent construction inspection and technical support for water supply infrastructure projects, ensuring construction activities comply with plans, specifications, approved submittals, engineering standards, safety requirements, and project objectives.
The Engineering Technician VI will perform field inspections, monitor contractor activities and safety compliance, assist with resolving technical and constructability issues, review contract documentation, support budget monitoring, and maintain detailed construction records. The position will also serve as a liaison among project personnel, Tribal representatives, project sponsors, consulting engineers, and construction contractors. Extensive experience with civil construction, rural water supply systems, water conveyance infrastructure, federal construction, and field inspection is strongly preferred.
Essential Functions Construction Inspection & Compliance Perform field inspections of construction contractor activities to verify compliance with project plans, specifications, approved submittals, referenced standards, and accepted engineering and construction practices.
Become thoroughly familiar with construction plans, specifications, contract documents, referenced standards, and approved submittals.
Serve as an on-site project representative while recognizing that the Engineering Technician does not have contractual authority to direct the construction contractor's performance.
Monitor construction methods, materials, equipment, and workmanship for conformance with project requirements.
Review contractor submittals and provide technical comments and recommendations.
Immediately report construction activities that do not comply with approved plans, specifications, or project requirements.
Technical & Engineering Support Apply practical knowledge of civil engineering concepts, principles, and practices related to rural water supply systems, water control structures, and water conveyance infrastructure.
Review plans and specifications and provide recommendations regarding technical and constructability considerations.
Assist in resolving design problems and field conditions using established engineering methods and practices.
Provide technical review of construction and contract documents.
Support the preparation and review of proposed contract modifications and associated documentation.
Assist in ensuring contract modifications and project documents comply with applicable agreements, requirements, and project objectives.
Prepare technical correspondence and supporting documentation for project stakeholders.
Construction Documentation & Reporting Prepare detailed written field reports documenting construction activities, equipment, personnel, progress, significant discussions, and safety issues.
Maintain photographic documentation of construction activities.
Caption construction photographs with the date, project title, contractor information, and a brief description of the activity shown.
Prepare clear, concise, and technically accurate narratives for construction and engineering reports.
Maintain accurate project records to support construction monitoring and contract administration.
Keep project leadership informed of construction progress, technical issues, and significant field developments.
Safety Monitoring Monitor contractor work activities for compliance with applicable construction safety standards and project safety requirements.
Identify potential hazards associated with construction operations.
Attend and actively participate in monthly toolbox safety meetings.
Document safety meeting attendance and prepare narratives describing topics and issues discussed.
Monitor changing field conditions that may require additional safety considerations.
Comply with applicable project Safety and Health Standards and required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
Project Coordination & Stakeholder Support Serve as a liaison among project personnel, Tribal representatives, sponsors, consulting engineers, construction contractors, and other project stakeholders.
Communicate project developments and construction progress to appropriate project representatives.
Assist with preparation of correspondence to Tribal representatives, sponsors, consulting engineers, and other stakeholders.
Coordinate field inspection trips and project activities as necessary.
Maintain professional communication with multidisciplinary project teams.
Budget & Program Support Assist with the review of annual budget submittals and evaluate the reasonableness of projected construction costs.
