The Department

Maths is extremely important within the School and pupils, who work far beyond their chronological age, attach great importance to their achievements in the subject. Previous pupils of ours have represented the UK in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), we tend to get more PMC bonus golds than any other school in the country, we are regularly on the TMC podium, and two of our pupils came second and fourth in last year’s JMO.

Our provision is extensive. We participate in a plethora of national competitions, such as the FMC, PMC, JMC, IMC, SMC & TMC. Three weekly pieces of provision are our iconic ‘Maths Hat’, ‘Maths Clinic’ and ‘Maths Extension Club’. Our renowned ‘Maths Hat’ tends to have dozens, if not hundreds, of entrants each week. ‘Maths Clinic’ uses student and teacher doctors to support.

In ‘Maths Extension Club’, students work through a series of mentoring resources, success in which grants them access to our Maths coach who’s there to stretch our very brightest. Pupils also enjoy expanding their knowledge outside the formal curriculum – external speakers regularly come to the School to speak to pupils, we celebrate Pi Day and speedcubing, and there is a code‑breaking course for pupils in Year 8 which includes an annual trip to Bletchley Park.
