Controls Engineer (Water Treatment Systems)

We are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to design, program, test, and commission control systems for water treatment, wastewater, municipal and industrial remediation projects. The role focuses on developing PLC/HMI/SCADA solutions, creating control panels and I/O wiring designs, integrating VFDs and field devices, and supporting commissioning and startup activities. Ideal candidates have hands-on experience with Control Logix/Compact Logix, Schneider, Factory Talk, Ignition or Wonderware, AutoCAD electrical drawings, and working knowledge of P& municipal project requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop PLC, HMI and SCADA control strategies for water, wastewater, municipal and industrial facilities.
  • Program, configure and debug PLCs (Control Logix, Compact Logix, Schneider and others) and associated HMIs/SCADA (Factory Talk, Ignition, Wonderware).
  • Create and review control panel layouts, I/O lists, wiring diagrams and AutoCAD electrical drawings to support fabrication and field installation.
  • Develop, execute and document factory acceptance tests (FAT), site acceptance tests (SAT) and commissioning procedures; support startup and troubleshooting on site.
  • Integrate VFDs, field devices and instrumentation; ensure proper communication over Ethernet and industrial networks.
  • Translate process and P&n into control logic, interlocks, alarms and operator interfaces; collaborate with process and electrical teams to optimize system performance.
  • Provide technical support to project managers, field technicians and clients during installation, testing and handover; respond to commissioning and warranty issues.
  • Prepare technical specifications, instrumentation and control documentation, I/O lists and vendor coordination packages.
  • Maintain project schedules and documentation, follow quality and safety procedures, and ensure compliance with municipal and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to standardize control systems, templates, and testing procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or related field (or equivalent technical experience).
  • 3+ years of experience in industrial automation, controls engineering, electrical design, or process controls.
  • Proficient programming and troubleshooting experience with PLC platforms (Rockwell Control Logix/Compact Logix preferred, Schneider experience a plus).
  • Experience with HMI/SCADA platforms such as Factory Talk, Ignition, Wonderware or equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge of AutoCAD Electrical, control panel design, I/O configuration, and interpreting P& process diagrams.
  • Experience commissioning and testing control systems (FAT/SAT) and providing onsite startup support.
  • Familiarity with VFD integration, industrial Ethernet networks, fieldbus protocols and instrumentation used in water/wastewater systems.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, able to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams; comfortable with occasional travel to project sites and client locations.
