Position: Settlements Accounting Analyst I, II, III or Senior

Job Overview

Senior Settlements Accounting Analyst – responsible for providing technical and analytical support to the Settlements Manager and Tri‑State Accounting. Duties include energy accounting (energy purchases and sales, electric transmission, natural gas purchases, and other operational services), verifying energy market revenue and expense accuracy, processing invoices, classifying revenue and expense items, recording purchase and sales quantities in corporate financial systems, and conducting regular and ad‑hoc analysis for internal and external stakeholders.

Position functions as a team leader, training and guiding Settlements and Energy Markets personnel, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with other Tri‑State departments and outside organizations.

Position Details

Available at one of four job grades:
Settlements Accounting Analyst I (Grade 5), Analysts II (Grade 7), Analysts III (Grade 8), or Senior Analyst (Grade 9). Salary ranges from $64,000 to $124,000, depending on qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities
  • Operate at a senior level across all responsibilities and demonstrate initiative and independence.
  • Serve as a subject‑matter expert for Settlements personnel and other Tri‑State business units.
  • Prioritize and support Settlements processes, troubleshoot problems, and communicate effective solutions.
  • Coordinate and develop strategies, processes, and procedures to optimize Settlements and Energy Markets performance.
  • Communicate with other Tri‑State business units and external entities to enhance operations and reputation.
  • Review, analyze, and evaluate Tri‑State Energy Market expense and revenue items to determine proper classification and recording.
  • Advise management on accounting standards for recording revenue, expenses, adjustments, accruals, and corrections.
  • Compile and ensure accuracy of information for monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting.
  • Prepare regulatory filings for FERC, SEC, state public utilities commissions, and other agencies.
  • Verify proper operation of Tri‑State software systems, participate in troubleshooting, and assist in the selection and setup of new systems.
  • Support internal and external audit staff with completion of interim and year‑end confirmations and audit questions regarding energy sales, purchased power, and transmission expenses.
  • Complete account reconciliations and review worksheets for accuracy and completeness.
  • Analyze purchase and sales contracts to determine appropriate processing and recording methodologies.
  • Provide liaison support between Energy Markets and Accounting for related information.
  • Adhere to company policies, CIP, WECC, FERC, NERC, MRO standards, and EEO laws and regulations.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related discipline (or equivalent education/experience).
  • Knowledge of accounting techniques and procedures.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, occasionally requiring unscheduled overtime.
Experience
  • Eight (8) or more years of progressive accounting experience. Candidates with fewer years may be considered for lower grade levels.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in electric cooperatives or utilities.
  • Knowledge and experience with electric organized markets.
  • Familiarity with power terminology.
  • Working knowledge of SEC and RUS financial reporting.
Other Requirements
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for meetings, conferences, and training.
