This is a technically skilled work program lasting up to three (3) years in maintenance and repair of the City’s Facilities. Work includes installing and maintaining plumbing fixtures; changing light bulbs, ballasts, switches and outlets; performing painting, carpentry, masonry, welding, fabrication, general structural and roofing work; and performing preventative maintenance on overhead bay doors, HVAC equipment, pumps and motors. Work is performed under the general direction of the Facilities Supervisor or designated lead worker.

Work is assigned orally or through work orders. Working hours may include any shift, weekends and holidays, and the applicant must be willing to work mandatory overtime for emergency work.

The Facilities Apprentice will receive training and instruction to learn the essential job functions of a Facilities Maintenance Technician. In addition, the Apprentice will accompany and assist the Facilities Section’s tradespeople in the maintenance and repair of the City’s facilities.

• Assists with installation and maintenance of plumbing systems and fixtures such as sewer lines, shower controls, and faucets
• Performs basic lighting maintenance including changing light bulbs and ballasts
• Assists with painting, drywall, carpentry, ceramic tile, general structural, and minor roofing repairs
• Learns to diagnose and support repairs across multiple trades while following established procedures and safety practices

• Assists with preventative maintenance on overhead bay doors, HVAC equipment, pumps, and motors
• Observes and learns troubleshooting and maintenance techniques from senior staff or supervisors
• Uses hand and power tools in a safe and appropriate manner while developing trade skills
• Operates light trucks and maintenance equipment as assigned and in accordance with training and safety guidelines

• Maintains a valid driver’s license and safe driving record in accordance with City policy
• Adheres to all safety procedures, policies, and apprentice training requirements
• Maintains regular and punctual attendance and demonstrates dependability
• Actively participates in on-the-job training, instruction, and skill development to progress toward full proficiency in building maintenance trades

Performs general custodial duties when necessary. Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job and other projects. Responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion.

• Graduation from high school or completion of GED
• Must possess a valid driver’s license, provide proof of a safe driving record, and maintain a safe driving record for continued employment

• Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

Work is physical in nature and requires sufficient physical stamina and strength for:

• Occasional sitting to perform daily office tasks and drive to and from work sites; constant standing and walking indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions over all types of terrain
