Description

Salary: $17.00 to $17.50 per hour (Depending on experience)

We are seeking a Classroom Aide who will support and assist in providing a safe, stimulating, and nurturing environment for the growth, well‑being, and development of children. The aide will incorporate Catholic Charities mission, vision, values, and philosophies into daily work and demonstrate a positive attitude and commitment to excellence.

Catholic Charities’ Head Start & Early Head Start programs promote school readiness and family self‑sufficiency through holistic services.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Convey messages that are respectful, patient, relaxed, and demonstrate interest in the child, fostering positive self‑esteem.
  • Assist the teaching team in selecting materials and equipment and arranging the classroom to create a welcoming environment appropriate to the developmental level of the children, supporting optimal engagement and respecting each child’s culture and home environment.
  • Support the teaching team in addressing children’s physical, cognitive, social, and emotional needs in a manner consistent with Head Start Performance Standards and Catholic Charities’ mission, fostering holistic child development and school readiness.
  • Assist in maintaining a classroom environment that incorporates the principles of the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS), improving emotional support, classroom organization, and instructional quality for better learning outcomes.
  • Provide emotional support by fostering a classroom where children feel motivated, nurtured, and connected, resulting in increased emotional security.
  • Ensure classroom organization so children have meaningful activities and remain engaged, promoting better focus and academic achievement.
  • Assist with instructional support by implementing a curriculum that effectively supports cognitive and language development, leading to measurable gains in children’s academic skills.
  • Support children with additional needs to enable successful inclusion and participation in classroom activities.
  • Model positive guidance and collaboration with children, co‑workers, and caregivers to maintain a respectful and cooperative environment.
  • Participate in team planning sessions with the teaching team to ensure coordinated instruction and consistency in meeting children’s developmental goals.
  • Assist teaching staff in ensuring appropriate behavior guidelines are followed, supporting a safe and orderly learning environment.
  • Comply with federal, state, and local guidelines and with policies of the Maryland State Office of Child Care, Head Start, and Catholic Charities to ensure legal and programmatic compliance.
  • Attend staff meetings and development activities to enhance professional skills and contribute to continuous program improvement.
  • Successfully complete required training within established guidelines, keeping knowledge and skills up to date.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support overall effectiveness and flexibility of classroom operations.
Education & Experience Requirements

Classroom Aide – $17.00 per hour:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Classroom Aide II – $17.50 per hour:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 90‑hour Child Care Certification.

  • Punctuality and reliable attendance.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a courteous and professional demeanor toward staff, clients, and visitors.
  • Patience and composure when working with children and interacting with parents.
  • Ability to connect with children and create an engaging environment.
  • Basic computer skills, including web browsing, online training, and email usage, or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to learn and use computer systems and software necessary for the duties of the position.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
  • No remote or hybrid work availability.
  • Must ascend/descend stairs as required.
  • Must perform tasks in various environments, including confined spaces.
  • May need standing or sitting for extended periods.
