As the Overdose Prevention & Response Paramedic, you will serve as a key member of a collaborative community-based response team designed to provide timely medical and recovery support to individuals experiencing an overdose or at risk for substance use-related harm. Working alongside Peer Recovery Support staff, you will respond to overdose events in real time, provide high-quality medical care, and help connect individuals with ongoing behavioral health and substance use treatment.
By combining emergency medical expertise with peer-led support, you will help build trust, expand access to recovery services, and create a compassionate pathway toward long-term recovery.
- Administer and direct basic and advanced life support emergency medical care. Provide guidance and support to basic life support providers.
- Conduct in-home medical assessments of identified high-utilizing and medically complex patients. Identify medical, behavioral, environmental, and social factors contributing to recurrent EMS and hospital utilization, overdose risk, and barriers to treatment and recovery.
- Develop individualized care plans in collaboration with patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, social service agencies, and other community partners.
- Support access to evidence-based treatment for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and other substance use disorders as authorized by applicable protocols, policies, and scope of practice.
- Provide appropriate medical and social-service referrals and facilitate connections to available community resources. Help patients navigate available healthcare and social-service systems.
- Coordinate care with primary care providers, specialists, hospitals, EMS agencies, behavioral health providers, and social service organizations.
- Follow up with patients after overdose events and other high-risk encounters to promote treatment engagement and adherence, reduce the risk of subsequent overdose, encourage appropriate use of healthcare resources, and support sustained recovery.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation and communicate relevant findings to appropriate healthcare partners.
- Participate in ongoing evaluation of program effectiveness, including tracking patient outcomes, EMS utilization, hospital utilization, and other performance measures.
- Work as part of an interdisciplinary team, including EMS personnel and Peer Recovery Support staff, to address the medical, behavioral, and social determinants contributing to overdose, substance use, recurrent healthcare utilization, and barriers to recovery.
- Check inventory and maintain equipment, vehicle and medical supplies. Complete inspections to verify vehicles, tools and equipment are properly maintained.
