Description

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for the provision of patient care activities, related non‑professional services necessary for patient care and the maintenance of the operating room under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The duties listed below describe the general nature and level of work performed in this position and are not an exclusive list of all job duties performed.

Responsibilities Clinical Practice
  • Demonstrates competency in all procedures within the scope of practice, including the ability to obtain, interpret and communicate information in terms of the patient’s needs, knowledge of growth and development, and an understanding of the range of treatment needs by age group.
  • Participates in the nursing process in all aspects of the delivery of patient care and completes all activities according to established policy, procedure and protocol.
  • Communicates accurate and timely information to the Registered Nurse regarding patients in their care.
  • Records pertinent information clearly, accurately, and in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with patients, significant others, and co‑workers.
  • Utilizes appropriate lines of communication.
  • Utilizes appropriate technique intraoperatively by setting up needed items for patient care and demonstrating knowledge of a variety of surgical procedures.
  • Gathers supplies, x‑rays and instruments/equipment for cases.
  • Handles instruments appropriately.
  • Maintains strict sterile technique.
  • Circulates under the direction of the Registered Nurse by appraising cleanliness of rooms and proper functioning of equipment, setting up needed equipment pertinent to patient care, assisting with anesthesia, carefully prepping the surgical site, assisting in proper patient positioning, preparing and labeling specimens, and accompanying the patient and anesthesia staff to the PACU.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of a variety of surgical procedures.
  • Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, organizes a plan of care that incorporates physician‑prescribed treatments, nursing assessments and diagnostic data in a manner that is prioritized, timely and integrated with the surgical plan of care.
  • Implements, documents and evaluates the plan of care in a manner that reflects management of identified problems, observations of the patient’s response to treatment, integration of physician’s orders, appropriate prioritization, and collaboration with physicians and other team members.
  • Demonstrates appropriate administration of medications and treatments according to policy, procedure and protocol.
  • Re‑evaluates and modifies the plan of care as indicated.
Clinical Leadership
  • Accepts responsibility for nursing activities related to the care of the patient within the operating room.
  • Demonstrates appropriate judgment and decision‑making skills.
  • Serves as a preceptor and orients new members of the surgical team.
  • Acts as the patient’s advocate in meeting their physical and psychological needs.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills and the ability to recognize and intervene in stressful situations involving the patient, significant other, and/or team members.
  • Creates and maintains a safe and comfortable environment in which surgery can take place.
Requirements

1 to 2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledgeable of principles of aseptic technique.
  • Ability to correlate clinical data with patient’s medical and nursing care.
  • Ability to set priorities.
  • Ability to provide direction to others that is clear, concise and promotes efficiency.
  • Ability to communicate well with patients, families, co‑workers, etc.
Salary

$28.00 - $37.00 depending on experience
