Truck Driver/Laborer, DPWUnder direct and general supervision, performs manual labor in connection with public works construction and maintenance programs; and performs related work as required.
Typical examples of duties may include but are not limited to:Operate the following
- Heavy and Light duty truck with or without dump body, sand spreader, snow plow and trailed equipment, compressor, pavement breaker, jack hammer, pavement saw cutter, leaf vacuum /blower, walk behind sidewalk sweeper, motorized plate compactor, curbing paver, grass mowers, trimmers and chain saws. Perform routine and preventive maintenance of light motorized equipment. Assist mechanic with minor repair work.
Perform various manual tasks such as but not limited to:
Repair, clean and construct catch basins, culverts, manholes and waterways;
Cut, remove and load roadside vegetation;
Collect leaves at roadside;
Install and make repairs to asphalt pavement;
Plow, blow, shovel and load snow;
Install and make repairs to sidewalks, curbs, stone walls, fences and guard rails;
Maintain public works facilities;
Collect and dispose of rubbish; and other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications Training and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent supplemented by one year of experience in construction labor and the operation of light motorized equipment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
Required LicensesValid Massachusetts CDL driver’s license or ability to obtain a license within six months of employment.
Preferred LicensesHoisting 2A, 4E and/or 4G
Knowledge, Abilities and SkillsWorking knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in general public works construction and maintenance activities. Working knowledge of the effective operation of light motorized equipment and knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations and the precautionary measures necessary to avoid accidents.
Physical and Environmental RequirementsThe ability to perform heavy manual labor. The ability to work out of doors and to endure exposure to extreme weather conditions. The ability to lift 60 pounds, (Example: pneumatic pavement breaker). The ability to climb or otherwise transverse rough or uneven terrain (Example: drainage trenches, ditches and culverts). The ability to work in close quarters (Example: catch basins, water service, water main and drainage pipe trenches.)
