Senior HVAC Service Technician Job Summary
The Senior HVAC Service Technician is one of the Company's lead field professionals, responsible for independently diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, installing, and commissioning residential and light commercial heating, cooling, and ventilation systems in accordance with manufacturer specifications, applicable codes, and Connecticut licensing requirements. This role requires advanced technical expertise, exceptional troubleshooting ability, sound judgment, and a safety-first mindset. As a senior member of the field team, this individual serves as a technical resource and mentor to apprentices and junior technicians, helping reinforce company standards, safety practices, and quality workmanship.
The Senior HVAC Service Technician takes ownership of complex service calls, supports installation teams on challenging projects, collaborates closely with dispatch, field supervisors, and sales teams, and consistently delivers an exceptional customer experience. This position represents the Company in customers' homes and businesses and sets the standard for professionalism, technical excellence, and integrity.
Essential Functions
- Independently perform residential and light commercial HVAC service work, including diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and commissioning heating, cooling, and ventilation systems and components.
- Perform system replacements, equipment installations, start-ups, commissioning, and final operational testing in accordance with manufacturer specifications and applicable codes.
- Execute preventive maintenance, system testing, and performance verification to ensure proper airflow, refrigerant charge, combustion efficiency, controls operation, and overall system performance.
- Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, refrigerant, airflow, and control system issues while developing effective repair solutions.
- Perform service-related repairs and installation-related connections in compliance with manufacturer specifications, applicable codes, Connecticut licensing requirements, and company quality standards.
- Handle refrigerants in accordance with EPA Section 608 requirements and all company safety policies.
- Work independently on service calls while collaborating with installation teams, dispatch, field supervisors, and sales to ensure efficient project execution.
- Take complete ownership of assigned service calls and installation projects from arrival through completion, ensuring exceptional workmanship, customer satisfaction, accurate documentation, and safe work practices.
- Communicate system conditions, repair recommendations, replacement options, and installation details clearly and professionally with customers while obtaining approvals and collecting payment in accordance with company procedures.
- Complete accurate work orders, job notes, start-up documentation, warranty information, time entries, and digital service records using company systems.
- Maintain service vehicles, tools, inventory, equipment, and PPE in a clean, organized, and job-ready condition.
- Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and industry best practices, including electrical safety, ladder safety, confined-space awareness, rigging and lifting techniques, lockout/tagout procedures, and hazardous material handling.
- Support emergency service calls and participate in the on-call rotation as required.
Senior-Level Leadership Responsibilities
- Serve as one of the Company's lead field technicians, handling the most technically complex service calls and challenging system diagnostics.
- Act as a technical mentor by providing hands-on coaching, troubleshooting guidance, and field support to apprentices and junior technicians.
- Assist with apprentice development, ride-alongs, and on-the-job training while reinforcing company standards for workmanship, safety, and customer service.
- Lead by example through professionalism, accountability, technical excellence, and a strong commitment to quality.
- Serve as a trusted technical resource for teammates when resolving difficult field issues or unique system challenges.
- Partner with field supervisors to identify training opportunities and support the ongoing development of the field team.
- Promote a culture of safety, teamwork, continuous learning, and customer satisfaction throughout the organization.
- Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Competencies
- Expert-level knowledge of residential and light commercial HVAC systems, equipment, controls, refrigeration circuits, combustion systems, airflow, and installation practices.
- Advanced troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, electrical, refrigerant, and control system issues.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex service calls with minimal supervision.
