Principal Bridge Engineer – Boston, MA / Westwood, MA
We are seeking a Principal Bridge Engineer to lead our team of engineers across a broad range of infrastructure and transportation projects.
Responsibilities- Act as discipline task lead and coordinate with staff to ensure ongoing communication, project progress and quality deliverables.
- Supervise staff and participate in quality control checks, maintaining quality standards in all work, checking computations and reviewing designs and drawings performed by others.
- Prime lead in developing resource estimates and budgets along with project schedules.
- Provide senior technical leadership for the planning and design of bridge and ancillary structures, overseeing structural systems, foundations, constructability, inspection and staging considerations, and coordination of maintenance and protection of traffic, drainage, and roadway interfaces.
- Research and develop feasible designs to meet client needs and regulatory requirements.
- Perform structural engineering analysis and calculations for bridge systems, including superstructures, substructures, bearings, and foundations.
- Understand and analyze results of preliminary studies such as traffic and environmental impacts and develop feasible concepts to resolve issues.
- Ensure that bridge designs comply with state and federal standards, especially those of transportation agencies such as the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, Connecticut Department of Transportation, and relevant regulatory agencies.
- Collaborate with the design team to develop detailed design documents for milestone submittals such as preliminary design, Advance Detail Plans, Environmental permitting, Right-of-Way Plans PSE and construction plans.
- Meet project deliverable schedules and budgets for assigned projects.
- Monitor resource budgets and schedules for assigned tasks/projects.
- Assist project managers in monthly reporting.
- Understand the Mott Mac Donald resource/skill network to ensure assignments and portions of the project design are being developed by the correct resources.
- Support marketing and business development initiatives.
- Engage with clients, ensuring excellent and professional interactions.
- Oversee the development of bridge projects in Open Bridge along with other automated/digital design tools.
- Independently evaluate, compile, and compute a variety of engineering data.
- Be current on transportation agencies efforts to employ digital delivery.
- Oversee the training and mentorship of junior staff.
- Must have the ability to work on multiple unique assignments simultaneously.
- A BS degree in civil engineering.
- 15+ years of experience in bridge design and design management, including bridge superstructures, substructures, bearings, and foundations.
- A Massachusetts PE license or the ability to obtain one.
- Proven experience in leading diverse teams, managing resources, and projects.
- Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
- Familiarity with Federal Highway Administration and Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
- Experience with Micro Station and Open Bridge;
AutoCAD and Civil 3D, P6 scheduling tools, drainage design. - High-quality interpersonal skills, including organization and attention to detail.

Individual pay is determined based on factors such as work location, education, experience, and unique skills.
The expected salary for this position is $156,000 – $191,000.
