Overview
Accounting Careers Trainee – Revenue Examiner 1 (target class) within the Employer Status Unit, responsible for determining employer liability for unemployment insurance coverage and related tasks.
Responsibilities- Respond to inquiries related to annual rate notice.
- Register employers for unemployment tax reporting.
- Determine status and liability of employers (new, successor, non‑subject).
- Status of employers (new employer, successor).
- Handle change of address or status.
- Discontinue or release liability for registered employers.
- Change payment option (tax or benefit reimbursing).
- Interpret unemployment laws and regulations.
- Manage joint and unit accounts of commonly controlled entities.
- Process partial transfers of Merit Rating experience.
- Prepare clearance statements for corporations regarding status with the Secretary of State.
- Identify potential employers subject to UI tax law.
- Notify employers of liability and initial rates.
- Terminate inactive employer accounts.
- Process and record all coverage information.
- Handle liability appeals.
- Maintain accurate and current files on each employer.

Employer Status Unit - Location:
Wethersfield, CT - Shift: First – full time, 40 hours per week
- Schedule:
Monday – Friday, Hybrid Schedule
Accountable for mastering skills necessary to satisfactorily complete the training program for a professional accounting or auditing position.
Examples of Duties- Receive training in introductory accounting or auditing work to qualify for advancement into a professional agency accounting or auditing position.
- Perform a variety of increasingly difficult duties as skills are acquired during the training period.
- Examine financial records of governmental or private businesses and accounting methods and procedures to ensure compliance with statutes, regulations, guidelines, or accepted accounting principles.
- Receive training in maintaining financial records and accounts, establishing financial statements and schedules, and preparing budget estimates.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Knowledge of accounting and auditing principles and practices.
- Business mathematics and statistics.
- Business use of information technology.
- Effective report writing.
- Ability to read and understand written materials.
- Ability to utilize computer software.
Must meet the experience and training requirements of the designated job class at completion of the development program.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience in conflict resolution.
- Experience in accounting or auditing.
- Experience with the CT Unemployment Insurance Program.
- Experience prioritizing multiple assignments with competing deadlines.
- Experience in providing verbal and written communication to customers.
