Bridge Inspection Team Leader/Manager
Hybrid – flexible location.
OverviewResponsible for the leadership and expansion of VHB’s bridge inspection practice across our footprint. The role involves planning and executing bridge inspections, managing a skilled team, ensuring quality, and collaborating with senior leadership to grow the practice. Successful candidates may also engage in complex bridge design and load‑rating work.
Responsibilities- Lead and supervise a team of bridge inspectors, overseeing quality, procedures, workload, and training.
- Strategize team development and growth in partnership with senior leadership.
- Prepare proposals for new inspection contracts in collaboration with the marketing team.
- Plan and perform structural inspections of highway, railroad bridges, culverts, ancillary structures, and buildings in compliance with NHI and AREMA Standards.
- Review inspection report narratives, sketches, photos, and basic repair/rehabilitation cost estimates for quality.
- Manage inspection equipment and budget to outfit teams with current gear.
- Mentor junior staff and support the expansion of the inspection practice across VHB.
- Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and adjacent to live highway or railroad traffic.
- Familiarity with MBTA, MassDOT, AASHTO, and AREMA inspection requirements.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proactive, self‑motivated, with strong attention to detail.
- Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
- Enthusiasm to learn, seek opportunities, and take responsibility.
- Willingness to work overnight and in challenging access situations.
- Experience with vertical lift equipment, under‑bridge inspection trucks, and rope access credentials is a plus.
- 8+ years of bridge inspection experience.
- B.S. in Civil Engineering (structural emphasis preferred).
- Completion of the NHI/FHWA Safety Inspection of In‑Service Bridges course preferred.
- Completion of the NHI/FHWA Fracture Critical (NSTM) course preferred.
- Valid driver’s license.
Boston/Watertown, MA: $115,000–170,000. Worcester, MA: $110,000–165,000 (final compensation based on qualifications).
