Position Summary

The Wethersfield Public Schools is seeking a highly qualified and collaborative Reading Specialist to provide direct, specialized reading instruction using evidence-based, structured literacy approaches to students with disabilities and those requiring tiered intervention. The Reading Specialist will provide targeted instruction through push-in and pull-out models. In addition, the Reading Specialist serves as a professional learning resource for classroom teachers, special education teachers, and para educators by delivering training, coaching, and instructional support aligned with structured literacy Programs (IEPs) through both push-in and pull-out models in small group settings.

Preference will be given to candidates with structured literacy training and certification, such as Orton-Gillingham, Wilson Reading System, or equivalent evidence-based programs.

Responsibilities

* Provide direct, explicit, and systematic reading instruction to students with IEPs in both push-in and pull-out settings.

* Implement structured literacy interventions aligned with student goals, using data-driven instructional decisions.

* Collaborate with special education and general education teachers to support literacy development across settings.

* Participate in the development, review, and implementation of IEPs, including progress monitoring and documentation of student growth.

* Maintain accurate records of student performance, progress reports, and service logs in accordance with district and state requirements.

* Consult regularly with case managers, classroom teachers, and families to share instructional strategies and progress.

* Administer and analyze diagnostic assessments to identify individual literacy needs and guide instruction.

* Participate in team meetings, professional development, and ongoing training related to literacy instruction and special education compliance.

* Demonstrate a commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students.

Qualifications

Required:

* Connecticut State Certification in Comprehensive Special Education (165) or Remedial Reading and Language Arts (097/102) or appropriate equivalent.

* Demonstrated knowledge of structured literacy principles and evidence-based reading interventions for students with dyslexia and other reading disabilities.

* Experience working with students with IEPs in small group and inclusive settings.

* Strong collaboration and communication skills with staff, families, and administrators.

Preferred:

* Certification or advanced training in Orton-Gillingham, Wilson Reading System, Lindamood-Bell, or another accredited structured literacy program.

* Experience with data collection and progress monitoring tools (e.g., DIBELS, Acadience, EasyCBM).

* Familiarity with Connecticut's Scientific Research-Based Interventions (SRBI) framework and CT Core Standards.
