Silas Deane Middle School has an opening for the  school year. Successful candidates will be responsible for the creation and implementation of IEP's and grade level curriculum. We are looking for a motivated and dedicated professional with superior collaboration skills to fill this opening.

Summary of Position:

The ideal candidate will have experience implementing research-based instructional practices and specialized interventions designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities across a range of academic and functional domains. They will incorporate developmentally appropriate, differentiated instruction and specially designed instruction to ensure meaningful access to the general education curriculum while supporting individualized student goals. The teacher will utilize evidence-based strategies that foster engagement, executive functioning skills, self-regulation, problem-solving, and collaborative learning.

The Special Education Teacher will promote independence and self-determination for each student, effectively assess student strengths and needs, and plan and deliver instruction aligned to individualized learning objectives. Responsibilities include curriculum and lesson planning, progress monitoring, data-driven decision-making, and the development and implementation of high-quality, legally compliant IEPs. The teacher will actively participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, PPTs, and parent conferences, maintaining clear and collaborative communication with families and staff.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong collaboration skills, working closely with general education teachers, related service providers, and families to ensure inclusive practices and fidelity of IEP implementation.

Duties & Responsibilities:

* Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) aligned to students' academic, social-emotional, behavioral, and transition needs.

* Serve as case manager, including drafting IEPs, collecting and analyzing progress data, preparing annual reviews, and coordinating transition planning.

* Chair and actively facilitate Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meetings; communicate effectively with families and multidisciplinary team members.

* Provide specially designed instruction in co-taught and/or self-contained settings to ensure access to grade-level curriculum.

* Ideal candidates will have experience/capacity in working with students in our life skills program or supporting mathematics/science at the high school level.

* Differentiate instruction and implement research-based interventions to meet diverse learning needs.

* Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, and paraprofessionals to ensure accommodations and modifications are implemented with fidelity.

* Conduct academic evaluations to support eligibility determinations and program development.

* Use district, classroom, and progress-monitoring data to inform instructional decisions and adjust supports.

* Maintain accurate, confidential student records and ensure compliance with state, federal, and district regulations.

* Develop and maintain organized daily and weekly lesson plans aligned to IEP goals and high school graduation requirements.

* Participate actively in multidisciplinary team meetings and school-based initiatives to support student success.

Qualifications:

* Must possess Connecticut Special Education Teacher Certification (#165, Comprehensive Special Education, K-12);

* Master's degree preferred;

* Experience working with school students including academic content, lesson modification, and delivery of services within an inclusive environment;

* Must have strong collaboration and communication skills;

* Strong understanding of students with disabilities;

* Possess strong assessment and report writing skills;

* Experience with writing and implementing IEP goals and objectives and participating in PPTs;

* Knowledge and experience with specialized instruction to ensure the provision of educational benefit.

* Previous experience teaching at the middle school level preferred
