Special Education Teacher (Long-term Substitute)
Wethersfield Public Schools in Wethersfield, CT, is seeking a motivated and dedicated professional with superior communication skills to fill a critical opening as a long-term substitute special education teacher at Emerson-Williams Elementary School. This position reports to the instructional supervisor of special education and the principal. The start date is August 17, 2026, and the end date is approximately November 2, 2026.
The position is paid on a per diem basis with no paid time away from work benefits. The chosen candidate may be employed by our temporary staffing partner, Kelly Educational Staffing.
The long-term substitute special education teacher will be responsible for curriculum and lesson planning and delivery, as well as assessing students and writing effective IEPs. Participation in interdisciplinary team meetings, PPTs, and parent meetings is an essential component of this position. The teacher must be skilled in providing on-going training and supervision to paraprofessionals and general educators in order to implement IEPs with fidelity.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Uphold administrative regulations, school rules and policies as determined by the state and local boards of education and negotiated agreements
- Develop and implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) designed to promote students' educational, physical, and/or social development
- Chair Planning and Placement (PPT) meetings and use PPT findings to improve the student learning experience
- Play an active role as case manager in the PPT process, including data collection and reporting progress on goals/objectives, developing IEPs for annual reviews, and transition planning
- Develop and implement strategies to meet the needs of students with a variety of disabilities
- Provide specialized instruction based on individual needs outlined in students' IEPs
- Use district and classroom data to identify support strategies
- Plan and participate in co-taught model and self-contained settings as necessary for student programming
- Maintain a daily and weekly schedule of class plans and activities
- Work collaboratively on a multidisciplinary team
- Conduct evaluations to assist PPT team in determining eligibility for special education services
- Evaluate progress and provide data driven reports to other school staff and parents
- Maintain and update cumulative and confidential files of students in the program
- Collaborate with general education teachers & paraprofessionals regarding accommodations & modifications
Qualifications:
- Must possess Connecticut Special Education Teacher Certification (#165, Comprehensive Special Education, K-12)
- Master's degree preferred
- Experience working with school students including academic content, lesson modification, and delivery of services within an inclusive environment
- Experience working in self-contained math or reading is preferred, but not required
- Must have strong collaboration and communication skills
- Strong understanding of students with disabilities in all areas
- Possess strong assessment and report writing skills
- Experience with writing and implementing IEP goals and objectives and participating in PPTs
- Knowledge and experience with specialized instruction to ensure the provision of educational benefit
