Silas Deane Middle School is seeking a motivated, dynamic and versatile music educator to work in the highly collaborative environment of the SDMS Music Team. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching middle school instrumental music (woodwinds, brass, percussion and strings) and possess a strong knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, general music instruction.
The band program consists of grade level band courses. General music instruction includes 7th and/or 8th grade courses designed to engage students not enrolled in performing ensembles. This program includes, but is not limited to, music appreciation, theory fundamentals, composition, and other areas of music education aimed at the 7th and 8th grade level.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Teach students the foundations and fundamental principles of music in accordance with the National and Connecticut State Standards and the Wethersfield Public Schools Music Curriculum
- Instruct large groups of students across a wide variety of band instruments (woodwinds, brass and percussion), developing their skills for participation in larger ensemble performances
- Teach and explore various genres of musical expression, music history, theory fundamentals and introductory composition
- Provide students with the freedom to explore and express themselves musically while differentiating instruction to meet diverse learning needs
- Plan, organize and facilitate daily class lessons, setting priorities and working independently with a strong sense of purpose
- Select and utilize age-appropriate repertoire, instructional books and resources to enhance student learning
- Implement a variety of educational technologies and music production resources within the classroom
- Plan, organize and implement school-wide musical events, showcase performances and evening concerts
- Care for and maintain all school owned musical property, including instruments, sheet music and classroom equipment
- Regularly communicate with parents, guardians and school staff regarding individual student progress and upcoming musical events
- Work closely with the SDMS Music team to foster a cohesive school-wide appreciation for the arts
Qualifications:
- Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree
- Appropriate CT Certification credentials (049 certification)
- Exemplary communication skills to be used when:
Teaching and meeting with students, parents, families and staff;
Writing formal and informal letters, messages, plans and comments;
Collaborating with students, parents, families and staff to organize and implement all school-wide music performances and various assemblies - Proven musicianship skills in vocal performance, piano accompaniment, and woodwind, brass, percussion, or strings performance
- Excellent classroom management skills with both small and large groups
- Ability to handle and treat the information confidentially
- Knowledge of restorative and trauma informed practices preferred
