Job Description

The CMT Technician performs construction materials testing and special inspections in both field and laboratory environments, ensuring compliance with ASTM, DOT, ACI, AWS, and IBC methods and standards. This role supports engineering staff with project execution and management by applying a solid understanding of engineering practices and construction methodologies, while accurately interpreting construction plans and specifications. The position involves frequent field work, laboratory analysis, and regular travel within the Southeast region.

Responsibilities

* Conduct field operations that include sampling, testing, special inspections, and observation of construction materials in accordance with ASTM, DOT, ACI, AWS, and IBC methods and standards.

* Assist engineering staff with project execution and management by applying an understanding of engineering practice, construction methodologies, and relevant codes and specifications.

* Read, interpret, and apply construction plans and specifications to ensure that testing and inspections align with project requirements.

* Perform laboratory analysis of construction materials using specified methods and standards to verify quality and compliance.

* Prepare clear, accurate, and well-organized test reports and documentation, utilizing technology and standard reporting tools.

* Communicate findings, observations, and test results effectively to project teams through both written and oral communication.

* Maintain testing equipment, tools, and instruments in proper working condition and follow established quality control procedures.

* Travel to project sites within the Southeast region, including up to approximately 10% travel outside the state of Alabama, to perform field testing and inspections.

* Work safely in outdoor environments, including walking over uneven and difficult terrain, standing for extended periods, and lifting up to 75 pounds as needed.

* Follow all applicable safety protocols, company procedures, and industry standards during field and laboratory activities.

Essential Skills

* Approximately 5 years of experience in construction materials testing (CMT).

* Hands-on experience with concrete testing and general materials testing in construction environments.

* Demonstrated ability to conduct CMT field operations, including sampling, testing, and inspection activities.

* Proficiency in reading and understanding construction plans and specifications.

* Ability to conduct laboratory analysis of construction materials in accordance with specified methods and standards.

* Capability to perform physically demanding tasks, including walking over uneven terrain, standing for long periods, and lifting up to 75 pounds.

* Willingness and ability to travel up to approximately 50% of the time within the Southeast region, including about 10% outside the state of Alabama.

* Strong written and oral communication skills to document and convey test results and observations effectively.

* Proficiency in report writing, organization, and the use of technology for documentation and communication.

* High school diploma or equivalent.

Additional

Skills & Qualifications

* Two-year or four-year college degree in science, construction, or engineering is preferred.

* Equivalent work history in lieu of formal education will be considered.

* Current certifications such as DOT, ACI, AWS, or other relevant construction materials testing certifications are preferred.

* Experience working in a testing laboratory environment is a plus.

* Work history in civil engineering or construction is highly valued.

* Ability and willingness to complete training and successfully obtain required certifications after hire.

* Background in construction management or inspection is beneficial.

* Strong organizational skills and attention to detail when handling multiple tasks and projects.

Work Environment

The role involves a mix of outdoor field work and indoor laboratory testing. Field work includes sampling and testing construction materials on active job sites, often requiring walking over uneven and difficult terrain and standing for extended periods in varying weather conditions. Laboratory work involves testing collected materials using established procedures and equipment in a controlled environment. The position requires up to approximately 50% travel within the Southeast region, including around 10% travel outside the state of Alabama.
