Overview
The Messina Family Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at South Shore Hospital is the first and only Level III NICU located in a community hospital in Massachusetts. The Level III Messina Family NICU and the Level II Andrade Family Special Care Nursery enable us to care for babies born at any time in pregnancy who have a wide range of medical conditions.
The unit is staffed by doctors, nurses and respiratory therapists with specific training in the care of ill, premature and recovering newborns. Our NICU doctors are dually affiliated with both South Shore Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital.
Positions are part time. The budgeted hours are 24 per week, with day shift (7:00 am–7:30 pm) and coverage of every third weekend and holiday rotation.
Minimum Qualifications- 3–5 years current NICU RN experience required.
- RN license in the State of Massachusetts.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) or other related certifications may be required.
- Administer medications following SSH policies, complete medication reconciliation and accurately document all narcotic administration.
- Develop, evaluate and update individualized plans of care, initiate admission assessment within 8 hours and document patient, family and significant other teaching needs.
- Continuously assess patient comfort using appropriate pain scale and document response to interventions.
- Communicate daily plan via white‑board and facilitate discharge or transfer aiming for 12:00 pm.
- Verify patient identification with two identifiers before any invasive procedure; ensure compliance with CDC hand hygiene guidelines and universal precautions.
- Maintain environment that meets regulatory requirements and understand roles during hospital codes/emergency preparedness.
- Practice evidence‑based care, obtain at least 5 contact hours per year and participate in quality improvement initiatives.
- Keep current with hospital policies, direct non‑licensed personnel and provide feedback to improve care.
- Use technological solutions such as Lotus Notes, department software and respond to downtime.
- Work within legal, regulatory and ethical standards; safeguard patient privacy and security.
- Deliver patient‑ and family‑centered care, respecting values and preferences and welcoming family participation.
- Provide culturally competent care, utilizing interpreter services and online resources as needed.
Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
Licenses & CertificationsRequired:
RN – Registered Nurse. Additional certifications (BLS, ACLS, NRP, PALS, TNCC, TCAR, etc.) may be required based on department needs.
