Responsibilities
  • Conducts proactive patrols of the hospital campus, including parking lots and satellite buildings.
    • Identifies security vulnerabilities, safety hazards and violations of hospital policy.
    • Takes immediate corrective action to mitigate the vulnerability or hazard, if possible.
    • Collaborates with other departments to mitigate or resolve issues when warranted.
    • Reports deficiencies to Supervisor or Lead Officer and documents via incident report or work order.
  • Inspects perimeter doors, offices, suites, patient care areas, satellite buildings and other locations to ensure areas are secured according to schedule.
    • Provides escorts to patients, visitors, staff and others in conformance with established procedures.
  • Provides access control.
    • Grants access to locked areas and buildings to authorized staff with a hospital identification badge.
    • Restricts access to individuals without authorized business.
    • Responds to all access requests in a timely manner.
    • Documents access control activities as per department policy.
    • Ensures the access control system operates as designed and safeguards areas.
    • Secures designated lobby areas with stanchions during visiting hours.
    • Can activate hospital lockdown on supervisor's order.
    • Inspects material leaving the hospital as appropriate.
  • Responds to emergent situations involving escalating and violent patients, visitors and others.
    • Responds immediately in a safe and appropriate manner.
    • Identifies self by name and department.
    • Takes command and control over the scene.
    • Removes potential weapons and other items from the area.
    • Communicates clearly using de‑escalation techniques.
    • Maintains proficiency in restraining patients through training.
    • Communicates with patients and family members after incidents professionally.
    • Performs one‑on‑one observation as requested by the supervisor.
    • Documents occurrences as required.
  • Responds immediately and appropriately to all emergencies and disaster situations.
    • Responds to Code Red and fire emergencies; initiates fire hazard mitigation and leads drills.
    • Responds to Code Adam (infant/child abduction) per policy.
    • Responds to Code Disaster Alerts and coordinates traffic control.
    • Responds to Code Blue (bomb threat), Code Yellow (chemical spill), Code Brown (utility interruption), and Code Silver (hostage).
    • Responds to medical emergencies in non‑patient care areas per training.
    • Completes incident reports after each event.
  • Performs service‑related duties.
    • Responds promptly to all calls, either by radio or phone.
    • Collects, secures and returns patient valuables and property.
    • Assists morgue as needed.
    • Assists nursing staff with patient lifts.
    • Delivers food and supplies to patient care areas during off‑hours.
    • Assists with vehicle issues such as jump‑starts, lockouts.
    • Assists patient transport staff during peak demand.
    • Provides courier service during peak times and off‑hours.
    • Returns valet cars to patients and visitors off‑hours.
    • Helps locate lost motor vehicles.
  • Monitors the hospital parking program.
    • Enforces parking program fairly and equitably.
    • Ensures only authorized vehicles access parking areas.
    • Responds to parking complaints and resolves when possible.
    • Patrols hospital owned parking lots.
    • Answers parking questions consistently.
  • Technology.
    • Monitors access control system and can unlock, lock or reset devices.
    • Monitors video surveillance system and can view recorded data.
    • Monitors infant protection system alarms and clears them.
    • Produces hospital identification badges digitally.
    • Reports system malfunctions to Operations Coordinator.
    • Can access vehicle registration data.
  • Conducts initial investigations.
    • Responds to incident scenes and follows protocol for security.
    • Receives victim and witness statements; photographs evidence when possible.
    • Secures potential evidence per policy.
    • Completes initial incident report and forwards it to Operations Coordinator.
  • Completes incident reports and other required documentation.
    • Completes all reports before shift end.
