Job Description

This entry-level Lab Technician I role on 2nd shift offers an opportunity to work in a high-volume environmental laboratory, preparing samples with accuracy and precision in accordance with established analytical standard operating procedures (SOPs). You will work both independently and as part of a collaborative team to meet daily production targets, ensure hold times and turnaround times are met, and consistently follow safe laboratory practices.

The role provides a clear career path into training on advanced instrumentation such as ICP-MS and GC-MS.

Responsibilities

* Independently prepare samples for analysis after appropriate training, following analytical SOPs and using basic instrumentation specific to the department and applicable analytical methodologies.

* Perform routine operation, maintenance, and calibration of preparation instruments and equipment to ensure reliable analytical results.

* Assist with validation and method detection limit (MDL) studies as needed to support laboratory quality and compliance.

* Input and maintain technical information in laboratory systems to support overall laboratory functions and operations.

* Maintain an accurate and complete Laboratory Notebook where applicable, documenting procedures, observations, and results in accordance with internal standards.

* Adhere to all internal standards, policies, and procedures to ensure quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.

* Perform other laboratory-related duties as required to support production and project needs.

* Carry out 2nd shift duties including sample intake, handling, and weighing of soil samples (unpacking), sample digestions, and monitoring of instrumentation during analysis.

* Conduct wet chemistry and sample preparation activities, ensuring proper labeling, handling, and storage of samples.

* Support sample intake processes by receiving, organizing, and tracking samples in a timely and accurate manner.

* Contribute to meeting daily production targets, hold times, and turnaround times in a deadline-driven, project-oriented environment.

* Follow safe laboratory practices at all times and help maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment.

Essential Skills

* High school diploma.

* Language skills: ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.

* Basic mathematical skills to perform routine calculations related to sample preparation and analysis.

* Basic reasoning skills and abilities to follow SOPs, troubleshoot straightforward issues, and make sound judgments within defined procedures.

* Basic computer skills to input, maintain, and retrieve technical information and laboratory data.

* Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 25 pounds on a frequent basis.

* Ability to perform sample preparation, sample intake, and wet chemistry tasks accurately and consistently.

* Ability to follow laboratory SOPs and internal standards with close attention to detail.

* Capability to work independently after training while collaborating effectively with the laboratory team.

* Willingness and ability to work 2nd shift, Monday through Friday, 3:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m, including a lunch break.

Additional

Skills & Qualifications

* Associate degree in chemistry or a similar scientific discipline is preferred.

* 1-2 years of relevant experience in analytical chemistry laboratories is preferred.

* Familiarity with environmental laboratory workflows and high-volume sample processing is beneficial.

* Experience with wet chemistry techniques and sample digestion procedures is an advantage.

* Interest in developing skills on advanced analytical instrumentation such as ICP-MS and GC-MS, with a clear career path for training.

* Strong attention to detail and commitment to data integrity and documentation.

* Ability to work effectively in a project-oriented, deadline-driven environment.

* Comfort with routine equipment operation, basic maintenance, and calibration tasks.

Work Environment

This role is based in a high-volume, production-focused environmental laboratory where work is project oriented and deadline driven. You will work on 2nd shift, Monday through Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., with a scheduled lunch break, and you will train on your assigned shift. The environment involves frequent handling, unpacking, weighing, and digestion of soil samples, along with wet chemistry procedures and monitoring of analytical instrumentation.

The laboratory uses established analytical SOPs, basic departmental instrumentation, and provides a pathway to training on advanced technologies such as ICP-MS and GC-MS. Work frequently requires lifting and moving items up to 25 pounds and performing repetitive sample preparation tasks in a fast-paced setting. Overtime opportunities may be available before your shift or on weekends, with supervisory approval, for tasks such as organization, waste disposal, and sample disposal.
