Job Title: Maintenance Technician (Levels I–IV)
Location: Public Works Shop – Wheat Ridge, CO 80033
Position Type: Full Time
Salary Range: $22.92 – $34.89 per hour
Job OverviewThe role involves performing a wide range of hands‑on street maintenance and repair tasks, including patching and reconstructing asphalt and concrete surfaces, operating jackhammers and concrete finishing tools, spreading gravel, grading alleys, rough carpentry, and snow and ice control using plow trucks, graders, and chemical spreaders. The position also requires operation and maintenance of heavy construction equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, rollers, sweepers, and specialized power tools, along with pre‑ and post‑trip inspections, fueling, and equipment troubleshooting.
Responsibilities- Perform asphalt and concrete repair and maintenance, including patching, crack sealing, and concrete cutting and breaking.
- Operate construction equipment (dump trucks, rollers, loaders, sweepers, compressors, jackhammers, paint sprayers, sandblasters, concrete saws, sewer jetters).
- Conduct snow removal duties by operating truck‑mounted snowplows, graders, and spreaders; apply chemical de‑icers.
- Install, maintain, and clear storm drain pipes, and ensure proper grading.
- Lay out, apply, and remove traffic control markings; set up work‑zone traffic control devices; direct and control traffic around work sites; develop traffic control plans as needed.
- Clean debris from streets, ditches, and public right‑of‑way areas.
- Perform routine facility and vehicle maintenance and basic building tasks.
- Use proper safety precautions for all work performed.
- Respond to public inquiries, requests for utility locations (including GIS research), and emergency calls on weekends and nights.
- Prepare daily reports, vehicle checklists, job report forms, and other required documentation.
- Perform related work as required and assigned.
- High school diploma or general education diploma (GED).
- No prior experience required for Level I; preferred experience in general construction or municipal government operations.
- Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required for Levels II–IV;
Level I must obtain a Class 8 CDL within 3 months of hire. - Flagger certification is required for Levels II–IV;
Level I must obtain flagger certification within 1 year of hire. - Minimum of 2 years of street maintenance experience required for LevelIII; 4 years for LevelIV.
- Completion of required training from previous levels is prerequisite for LevelsII–IV.
- APWA Winter Maintenance Operator Certificate is an additional qualification for LevelII.
- Valid Colorado driver’s license with a safe driving record.
- Successful completion of pre‑employment and ongoing random drug screenings, background checks, motor vehicle record checks, DOT physical, and criminal background check.
The position is full‑time, 7a.m.–3:30p.m. at the Public Works Shop. Employees routinely work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme cold, extreme heat, wet or humid environments, confined spaces, and areas with fumes, chemicals, or electrical hazards. Noise is typically loud. Employees may be required to work extended hours, weekends, and respond to emergency call‑outs.
Physical DemandsWork requires standing, walking, sitting, using hands to handle, reaching, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Manual labor for extended periods under all weather conditions; lift or move 25pounds on a regular basis, 50pounds frequently, and occasionally more than 100pounds with assistance. Specific vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception. Ability to drive extended periods at various times of day.
