GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs a wide variety of administrative and clerical duties to help ensure the ongoing operation of the museum facilities and grounds, including providing regional and local historic information to the public; assists in regional and local historic research; organizes and keeps inventory of historic artifacts and conducts educational tours of museum. Responsible for staffing the museum at the Wheat Ridge Historical Park, answering questions, scheduling and guiding tours, and providing miscellaneous services to visitors.

Also responsible for filing and cataloging donations in collaboration with Wheat Ridge Historical Society volunteers.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Staffs the museum information desk; serves as initial point of contact with varied members of the public.
  • Answers telephones, schedules tours, program participants and other receptionist duties as needed.
  • Prepares talks and leads tours providing general information relating to the historical themes of the park.
  • Creates exhibits as needed.
  • Prepares programs to children and assists teachers with their visit.
  • Develops positive relations with visitors; provides information concerning facility and program(s) to visitors.
  • Coordinates with the Wheat Ridge Historical Society as needed.
  • Documents and submits building and grounds maintenance concerns via a shift summary report to Supervisor.
  • Completes light cleaning and organization throughout the buildings at the Historical Park.
  • Staff are responsible for securing their own substitutes in their absence, within reasonable advance notice.
QUALIFICATIONS

No formal education or training required, but education and/or experience with museums, tours, history, anthropology, or related fields and/or areas is preferred.

  • To lead tours and instruct and oversee a group of youth and/or young adults.

  • Express ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, the public, volunteers and those of other agencies.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment within a historic building. Work involves working closely with others and occasionally working alone. Work environment may, depending on area, involve frequent exposure to irritating chemicals, machinery and its moving parts, slippery or uneven walking surfaces, dust, dirt, heat, cold, fumes, odors, noise, wetness, humidity, solvents, oils, and gases. This role requires a high degree of manual skill;

needs the ability to hear, focus on close work, and use hands to fingers. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to bend, crouch or stoop, reach, climb, lift, carry, push or pull objects weighing less than 24 lbs. This position involves intermittently sitting, standing and walking.

HOURS OF WORK, LOCATION, AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

This is a part-time 5-hour/week position, with shifts on Fridays from 10am-3pm except for city holidays. There will be occasional additional hours for scheduled group tours from organizations such as schools, camps, and recreation centers.

This position works out of the Wheat Ridge Historical Park at 4610 N. Robb St. Wheat Ridge, CO 80033.
