As our engineering capabilities continue to grow, we are seeking an experienced Roadway Resident Engineer – Night Shift to support transportation infrastructure projects throughout Illinois. This role is ideal for a construction professional who enjoys being in the field, solving problems, coordinating teams, and ensuring projects are delivered safely and successfully.

Position Summary The Roadway Resident Engineer serves as the owner’s representative in the field, overseeing roadway and transportation construction activities, ensuring compliance with contract documents, IDOT specifications, project plans, and quality standards.

This position supports night shift construction operations and requires regular overnight work hours. The successful candidate will work closely with contractors, inspectors, municipalities, utilities, and project stakeholders to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established requirements.

Key Responsibilities Serve as the primary on-site representative for roadway and transportation construction projects.

Administer construction documentation and project records in accordance with IDOT requirements and contract specifications.

Monitor contractor activities to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, safety requirements, and quality standards.

Coordinate daily construction activities with contractors, inspectors, owners, utilities, and stakeholders.

Review contractor schedules, work plans, traffic control plans, submittals, RFIs, and project documentation.

Perform field observations and inspections to verify construction progress, workmanship, materials, and quantities.

Maintain accurate daily reports, field documentation, quantity records, and project correspondence.

Review contractor pay estimates, change orders, and quantity documentation.

Facilitate project meetings and communicate project status, issues, and resolutions.

Identify construction challenges and provide timely solutions in coordination with project leadership.

Ensure compliance with IDOT documentation requirements and applicable construction standards.

Assist with project closeout, final inspections, punch lists, and record documentation.

Promote a strong safety culture on active construction sites.

Build and maintain positive relationships with clients, contractors, and project partners.

Support continuous improvement initiatives that increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve project delivery.

Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or equivalent related field experience with IDOT and roadway construction.

Minimum of 3 years of roadway construction inspection, construction engineering, or construction management experience.

Experience working on IDOT, municipal, county, or transportation infrastructure projects.

Understanding of roadway construction methods, materials, and inspection practices.

Ability to interpret construction plans, specifications, and engineering drawings.

Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to work independently while effectively coordinating with project teams and stakeholders.

Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites.

Preferred Qualifications IDOT construction documentation certifications.

Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.

Professional Engineer (PE) license.

Experience serving as a Resident Engineer or Project Engineer.

Experience with IDOT construction documentation requirements.

Additional IDOT certifications related to construction inspection, materials, or documentation.

Experience using electronic construction management systems.

Required Skills & Competencies Knowledge of IDOT Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction.
