We are pleased to offer the opportunity to work as a Stationary Engineer for the DuPage County Facilities Management Department.
Posting will only consider internal candidates within the same job classification from 8/27/25 - 9/01/25. Starting 9/02/25, external applicants that qualify for the position will also be considered.
This position is assigned to the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 399 BARGINING UNIT POSITION.
The salary for this position is $86,700 plus a $1.25 per hour shift differential for all shifts scheduled to begin work between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., and/or a $1.25 per hour shift differential for any employee scheduled to work the 48 hours between 12:00 a.m. (midnight) on Saturday morning and 11:59 p.m. on Sunday evening.

Responsibilities- Operate, maintain and repair all Power Plant, tunnel, and County owned or leased facilities, and related equipment (e.g. high temperature and high pressure hot water generators, high and low pressure steam boilers, centrifugal and absorption chillers, air conditioning units, high voltage electrical distribution and emergency electric power generators, air compressors, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, pumping systems, air handlers, vacuum and circulating pumps, hot water systems, circulating and ventilating fans, water softeners, steam traps, and other mechanical, steam, pneumatically or electrically powered equipment).
- Perform power plant stationary engineer duties as required.
- Be responsible through specific assignment for a County facility or group of facilities to provide stationary engineer duties for preventive maintenance, repair and installation of facilities’ HVAC equipment.
- Provide response to facilities’ occupant environmental requests.
- Check equipment operation for proper functioning.
- Maintain records of work performed.
- Maintain inventory and recommend ordering of stock and materials to supervisor.
- Read gauges and manipulate valves to control water levels and pressures in boilers and other vessels.
- Draw water samples from various systems.
- Test samples by established procedures and adjust chemical feed according to results.
- Conduct hydrostatic pressure tests to ensure sealed gaskets.
- Pack valves, change filters and oil, grease pumps, motors, bearings and valve stems.
- Perform scheduled rounds and record pertinent readings and data to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Notify appropriate staff of emergencies.
- Complete scheduled preventive maintenance and emergency work orders.
- Install, maintain and repair equipment that controls other equipment such as pneumatic and electronic (DDC) thermostats, controllers, and limit and safety control devices.
- Move items such as pallets of water softener salt, compressed gas cylinders and other supplies to and from designated storage areas, racks or shelves.
- Provide assistance to other labor trades classifications.
- Maintain and repair various types of mechanical equipment of the HVAC system, such as feed pumps, vacuum pumps, circulating pumps, air compressors, refrigeration compressors, condensers, evaporators, hot water generators, circulating and ventilating fans, and similar mechanical, steam or electrically operated equipment.
- Power plant assignments on a rotating basis or as needed for coverage.
- Completion of a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma equivalent.
- Four (4) years’ experience as a licensed Stationary Engineer; operating, repairing and maintaining high‑pressure vessels and related equipment or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Licensed as a registered Stationary Engineer by the City of Chicago or other equivalent license.
