Rehabilitation Nurse Technician (RNT)

Position: 0.9 full‑time equivalent (FTE)

Salary range: $19.07 - $23.83 per hour. Placement within the range depends on experience and internal equity. For union positions, placement follows the collective bargaining agreement.

Sign‑On Bonus: $4,000 (internal transfers and rehires within one year are ineligible)

Job Description

As a Rehabilitation Nurse Technician (RNT), you will work under the direction of a registered nurse to support patients in the rehabilitation environment. The RNT assists patients with activities of daily living, mobility skills, skin, bowel, and bladder programs, and maintains a safe environment. Technical duties include de‑escalation techniques, 12‑lead EKGs, and supporting unit quality projects. The RNT also precepts new RNT employees and collaborates with nursing students during clinical rotation.

Responsibilities

Patient Care / Clinical Duties:

  • Collects and reports physiological, psychological, and functional data per patient care plan.
  • Assists and instructs patients with personal hygiene and activities of daily living.
  • Performs preventive skin care and reports skin integrity changes to the RN.
  • Assists with bladder and bowel training programs; performs straight catheterization under RN direction.
  • Obtains and documents vital signs and communicates reportable values to RN.
  • Assists with transfers, mobility, and safe patient handling as delegated by RN.
  • Applies assistive devices and prosthetics/orthoses according to care plan.
  • Assists with menu planning, meal trays, and documentation of intake and output.
  • Provides 1:1 feeding support and swallowing strategies for dysphagia patients.
  • Answers and triages patient call lights with urgency.
  • Prepares patient room for therapy.
  • Gathers weekly weights and escalates changes as needed.
  • Collects laboratory specimens per RN direction.
  • Obtains blood glucose and 12‑lead EKG as ordered.
  • Transfers patients to tank oxygen or tube feedings for therapy.
  • Supervises activities or restraint use for high‑risk patients.
  • Regularly conducts comfort and safety rounds.
  • Provides de‑escalation techniques for agitated patients.
  • Serves as a safety 1:1 for patients as needed.
  • Maintains and organizes unit equipment inventories.
  • Precepts new employees and partners with RNT‑certified nursing students.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by nurse manager or charge nurse.
  • Acts on the Cardiac Arrest team performing high‑quality CPR.
  • Participates in bedside handoff.

Quality Improvement:

  • Participates in system and local quality improvement goals.
  • Collects data and audits for Joint Commission readiness and improvement projects.
  • Assists in maintaining unit readiness to meet regulatory standards.

Communication:

  • Maintains therapeutic relationships for optimal, customer‑focused care.
  • Communicates effectively with patients at appropriate levels and cultural sensitivity.
  • Interacts with peers and hospital staff to foster positive relationships.
  • Triages patient concerns to RN effectively.

Infection Control / Patient Safety:

  • Contributes to safe, effective, and professional patient care, including safety/restrictive devices.
  • Follows Infection Control policies and procedures.
  • Maintains knowledge of Marianjoy policies concerning precautions, codes, and safety procedures.

Adaptability and Flexibility:

  • Rotates to all units based on patient care needs.
  • Adjusts to changes in policy, procedure, unit, and patient population.
Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Current Nursing Assistant certification (C.N.A.) or current enrollment in an RN program with completion of two clinical rotations.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Ability to communicate with diverse individuals and provide high‑level customer service.
