Position Overview:

This position plays a critical role in protecting and enhancing Montgomery Parks' urban forest resources, strengthening community stewardship, and supporting the long-term sustainability, safety, and beauty of the County's parks and natural areas. The Seasonal Tree Care Volunteer Program Coordinator will work alongside Tree Care Volunteer Program Assistant, Urban Forest Patch Program Manager, and the Southern Parks Operations Rapid Response Team under the supervision of the Volunteer Service and Community Partnership Supervisor on volunteer based tree initiatives and community service efforts in the Southern Management Area in Montgomery County Parks.

The grant funded position will coordinate the Montgomery Parks Volunteer Tree Care Program, participate in special/seasonal events (examples include Earth Month, Community Service Week, and National Public Lands Day), and aid in additional projects and programs that involve the VSO.

The position will also have the opportunity to work with non-profit organization partners, watershed groups, school groups and community volunteers.

About the Volunteer Services Office

The Volunteer Services Office provides central coordination and management of volunteer and community service programs. Functions include planning and consultation, recruitment, outreach, screening, training, recognition, data collection and management, and evaluation. Volunteer resources include students, corporate partners, and traditional volunteers. The Volunteer Services Office serves as a key liaison between Montgomery Parks staff and a variety of volunteer and community-based groups countywide.

These include friends groups, watershed groups, non-profit organizations, and volunteer groups that work with Parks on annual projects or seasonal programs while providing participants with valuable volunteer experiences.

  • Coordinate and lead the Volunteer Tree Care Program, including volunteer recruitment, scheduling, training, on-site education, and stewardship activities.
  • Manage volunteer projects, special events, and outreach initiatives, particularly in Equity Areas and underserved communities, in collaboration with Chesapeake Bay Trust and Parks staff.
  • Support Forestry and Park Operations tree projects by coordinating site preparation, evaluating work locations, preparing supplies and equipment, and overseeing volunteer engagement.
  • Maintain accurate volunteer, tree care, and project records in Samaritan, Tree Keepers, and other databases; collect, track, analyze, and report program data.
  • Monitor and document budget-related activities with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Provide professional customer service and maintain effective communication with volunteers, community partners, staff, and external organizations.
