Gardens as a Seasonal Gardener Assistant and spend your season making a visible difference in one of Montgomery County’s most beloved public gardens.
Brookside Gardens is seeking an energetic and reliable part-time Seasonal Gardener Assistant in Wheaton, MD to support daily gardening and landscape maintenance tasks throughout the growing season. The ideal candidate is energetic, enjoys spending time outdoors, interacting with people, and has an outstanding work ethic with great attention to detail. Applicants should have a basic knowledge of plants and experience using a variety of equipment for tasks like planting, pruning, weeding, and mulching.
On the job training will be provided as necessary. This position will run from March 2026 – November 2026 with a working schedule of up to 32 hours per week.
The Horticulture, Forestry, and Environmental Education (HFEE) Division preserves and maintains our parks’ natural and cultural resources. Brookside Gardens is one of our public gardens, showcasing horticultural exhibits designed and maintained using ecological landscape practices. Our public gardens offer a wide variety of educational programs for children and adults are planned to excite curiosity and encourage lifelong learning, with the vision of mobilizing residents of Montgomery County as dedicated stewards of the natural world.

Examples of Important Duties- Assists Horticulture staff with all maintenance and planting tasks including bed preparation, mulching, and weeding.
- Operates power equipment.
- Uses a variety of hand tools for landscape maintenance.
- Interacts with visitors in a friendly and helpful manner.
- Assists in the supervision of volunteer groups.
- Applicants must be at least 18 years or older.
- Basic knowledge of plants. Experience using a variety of equipment for tasks including planting, pruning, weeding, and mulching.
May be subject to medical, drug and alcohol testing.
Working ConditionsPrimarily works outside. Exposed to weather, dirt, waste, odors, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (for example, bees, hornets, wasps, etc.). Must be able to bend, stoop, stretch, climb and lift up to 50 pounds. Works independently and as part of a team.
Additional Supplemental Information- This position is not eligible for benefits.
