Job Specific Information:
Requires flexible hours, weekends, and occasional overtime. Only candidates who completed a screening interview with the Dept. School Safety & Security will be considered. Preference is given to bilingual English/Spanish candidates with knowledge of safety procedures, behavior management, investigative procedures, and excellent communication skills.

SummaryPositions in this class are assigned to the local school to assist the administration in maintaining a safe and secure learning environment. Under general supervision of the security team leader, responsibilities include screening visitor access to school facilities, maintaining student class attendance, and supporting other school security operations.
Responsibilities- Assist in screening visitor access to school facilities.
- Maintain student class attendance.
- Support school security operations.
- Follow guidance from the security team leader for unusual or difficult situations.
Sufficient physical strength to intervene in fights and physically restrain persons; stamina to walk and stand for long periods and complete security patrol duties; ability to patrol outdoors in inclement and extreme weather conditions.
Special Requirements- Work flexible hours, including weekends, as assigned by the principal or security team leader.
- Work occasional overtime.
- Wear designated security uniforms.
- Knowledge of procedures and practices for ensuring safety and welfare of others.
- Knowledge of behavior management techniques.
- Knowledge of security practices and procedures.
- Investigative procedures knowledge desirable.
- Understanding of school and MCPS policies on student attendance, suspension, and behavior.
- Effective communication with students and staff.
- Teamwork and ability to perform tasks under supervision.
- Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
- Knowledge of the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System.
High school or GED diploma required. Associate’s degree preferred. College coursework in criminology, law enforcement, or related fields is desirable. Experience in work involving the welfare and safety of students is preferred. Experience in investigation and in safety and security of persons and property, preferably as a police officer, is desirable. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience that provide the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills may be considered.
Certifications& Licenses
- Valid Maryland class C (noncommercial) driver’s license, or equivalent.
- First aid and CPR certification.
