The successful candidate for the Office Operations Assistant position will be enthusiastic and organized, with strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail.
The successful candidate should be a good communicator who maintains strong working relationships with staff, volunteers, researchers, and community partners.
About West Virginia Independence Hall
Originally built in 1859 in Wheeling, WV, the Wheeling Custom House is considered to be the “Birthplace of West Virginia.” The 22,000 square foot building, now appropriately renamed West Virginia Independence Hall, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, and was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1988. The building is now a museum and visitors center.
DutiesAnd Responsibilities
- Greets visitors and answers general questions concerning exhibits, events programming and future activities.
- Maintains gift shop and inventory on hand in conjunction with Facility Manager and Retail manager.
- Maintains gift shop cleanliness.
- Prepare paperwork to close out daily sales.
- Deposit gift shop sales and prepare reports.
- Maintain cleanliness of first floor.
- Prepares and files written incident, observation and security reports.
- Answer incoming phone calls, direct inquiries and provide information as appropriate.
- Prepare and format various documents including correspondence, forms, labels and reports.
- Operate and maintain modern office technology.
- Compile reports and statistical data.
- Conduct tours of the facility when necessary.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of modern office procedures, organizational methods and digital/physical filing systems.
- Knowledge of professional communication, business writing and office software.
- Knowledge of Google Office Suite.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations relevant to clerical work.
- Ability to follow detailed verbal and written directions.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to speak in a clear manner.
- Ability to memorize a script to give tours.
This position is located in Wheeling, West Virginia, and requires a full-time work schedule during regular business hours, Tuesday through Saturday, to align with visitor hours. Some weekend and evening work is required. Remote work is not permitted. Limited travel may be required.
