Position Overview
The Production Department at The New School’s College of Performing Arts is looking for an Overhire Board Operator. The role reports to the Audio & Video Supervisor and is responsible for supporting the audio and video needs of academic‐related performances and partner events across the College. Responsibilities include managing projection, video, and audio systems during theatrical productions where live mixing is not required, taking cues from stage management, and implementing designs from the Sound or Projection Designer.
CoreCapabilities, Primary Duties, and Responsibilities
- Take cues from stage management during technical rehearsals and performances of drama shows; assist in programming video content using Qlab, Watchout, Millumin, Isadora, or other software.
- Understand and execute design technical aspects, interpreting audio and video needs, signal flow plans, I/O lists, ground plans.
- Set up, place, patch, and test microphones and speakers per the sound designer’s specifications.
- Provide professional, courteous service to all parties.
- Serve as System Tech and Console Operator: set up, operate, and strike equipment (projectors, cameras, audio consoles, playback systems) before, during, and after events.
- Direct technicians, Assistant Stage Managers, or stagecrew members under supervision, offering guidance to meet the institution’s standard.
- Complete any additional responsibilities as assigned.
- Working knowledge of Qlab5, Isadora, Millumin, Watchout, or similar projection software.
- At least 2 years of experience as a live sound engineer for concerts, corporate events, or theater.
- Excellent knowledge of proper gain structure and video signal flow in theatrical systems.
- Working knowledge of audio software such as Wireless Workbench6, Dante Virtual Soundcard, Dante Controller, etc.
- Ability to interpret event technical documents: technical riders, signal flow diagrams, input lists, ground plans, run‑of‑show, cue lists.
- Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, and time‑management skills.
- Ability to communicate with leadership and designers to ensure successful productions.
- Dependable punctuality, professionalism, and collaborative attitude with students, faculty, and staff.
- Corporate, special events, festival sound, and broadcast experience.
- Self‑motivated with ability to work independently.
- Physical capability: lift up to 50lbs, climb ladders/scaffolding, operate Genies, comfortable working at heights.
- Knowledge of digital audio consoles (Yamaha, Allen & Heath, Midas, Behringer).
Primarily on‑site and based on campus to support effective collaboration.
Salary Range$30.00 per hour.
