Temporary Overhire Scenic Artist

Position Overview

The College of Performing Arts at The New School is seeking a highly qualified Overhire Scenic Artist to support its Performance Operations – Scenic Department. The role involves completing and finishing scenic builds as delegated by the Scenic Charge Artist and Production Shops Manager. This is an overhire position without guaranteed weekly hours; opportunities are scheduled as needed. The position may be renewed pending institutional needs and funding availability.

• Serve as a painter to assist the Scenic Charge Artist with tasks as needed.
• Carry out duties assigned by the Scenic Charge Artist or Production Shops Manager.
• Maintain a clean paint area in the prop shop and clean up at the end of each day.
• Work alongside carpenters for space management and build completion.
• Apply painting techniques to scenery.
• Ensure proper fire retardancy is added to paint and scenery as required by the Production Shops Manager.
• Complete additional duties as assigned.

• Familiarity with theatrical painting techniques.
• Comfortable working independently and asking for clarification when needed.
• Ability to read a scale rule.
• Experience as a theatrical scenic painter.

This position is primarily in‑person on campus to support effective collaboration. Some weekend and weeknight work may be scheduled as required by production tech schedules.

$30.00 per hour.
