EvaluationPerformance will be evaluated by the building principal, athletic director, principal's designee and in accordance with WV State Board Policy 5310.
Job SummaryThe person employed for this position must be able to teach the fundamentals of the sport and instill good sportsmanship behaviors in the participants. Additionally, adherence to WVSSAC rules and regulations as well as school and district policies is required.
Professional and Interpersonal Relations- Cooperates with building principal.
- Cooperates with athletic director.
- Develops rapport with coaching staff within school.
- Adheres to the directives of the head coach.
- Develops positive relationship with participants, student body, faculty, parents, community, game officials, news media, and opponents.
- Employs appropriate conduct during games and practices.
- Attends league, conference and WVSSAC meetings.
- Participates in activities that foster professional growth and development.
- Motivates staff and players toward desired goals.
- Commands respect by example in appearance, manners, behavior and language. Understands and follows oral and written directions.
- Reads, interprets, applies and explains rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with all types of people, establish and maintain a working relationship with students, coaches and other college administrators.
- Supervises assistant coaches in recruiting, practice implementation and game management.
- Organizes and implements practice and game plans in coordination with coaching staff.
- Develops high caliber and quality instruction.
- Teaches individual fundamental skills, team play, team strategy and rules and regulations of the game.
- Handles athletic injuries.
- Cares for equipment.
- Supervises participants and disciplines team appropriately.
- Designs quality organization of practice sessions.
- Designs pre‑season planning.
- Supervises managers and other support personnel.
- Manages budget.
- Follows purchasing procedures.
- Initiates game organization skills.
- Follows league, conference, and WVSSAC policies.
- Devotes time and energy to coaching duties.
- Follows end‑of‑season procedures.
- Other duties/responsibilities assigned by the principal, athletic director, principal's designee.
- Teaches good sportsmanship and self‑control.
- Checks eligibility of participants, including insurance coverage and parent consent.
- Provides students a proper role model, emotional support, patience, a friendly attitude and general guidance.
- Conducts learning experiences, with small groups of student athletes.
- Recommends the purchase of equipment, supplies and uniforms as appropriate for the health, safety and welfare of student athletes.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Valid West Virginia teaching certificate/license; or WVDE substitute permit; or high school diploma or GED.
- Must hold a valid CPR/AED certification.
- Coaches that are not professional teachers are required to complete the WVSSAC Training and Certification Program.
