Human Service Faculty

Position Overview

West Virginia Northern Community College is seeking a nine (9)-month full‑time faculty member to teach in the Liberal Arts and Public Service Division. Responsibilities include classroom instruction, student advising, recruiting, program assessment, and curriculum development. This position will be based on the Wheeling campus with some teaching responsibilities at the Weirton or New Martinsville campus.

Salary will be based on the current faculty salary scale. Benefits include retirement with employer matching, health insurance, life insurance, social security, and Northern tuition waivers.

• Teach 30 credits (or 600 health‑science contact hours) per academic year.
• Develop a syllabus for each course and submit electronically to the Division Chair by the first day of class.
• Provide instructional services for scheduled classes.
• Notify the Division Chair of any planned travel and complete the Absence Form.
• Maintain a minimum of 10 office hours per week, with two by appointment only.
• Report first‑week attendance and final grades via the academic system within established deadlines.
• Advise students in their program(s), including academic counseling, course scheduling assistance, withdrawal/retention counseling, and career guidance.
• Participate in commencement ceremonies.
• Prepare program review, annual report, course and program assessment, and other accreditation related reports.
• Assist the Division Chair with equipment maintenance, semester scheduling, textbook selection, proposals for new courses, programs, and certificates.
• Meet with the Program Advisory Committee at least once a year to review and recommend program changes.
• Recruit students by visiting high schools, college fairs, businesses, and agencies related to the program.
• Assist in the evaluation and supervision of students serving as lab assistants or in other work‑study capacities.
• Review portfolios for the Board of Governors degree and other experiential learning assessment programs.
• Participate in institutional activities such as college‑wide events, standing committees, marketing activities, and public service activities.
• Attend Faculty Assembly meetings, academic division meetings, advisory committee meetings, and other faculty events.
• Engage in professional development activities and professional organizations.
• Integrate writing, technology, computer applications, and oral presentation requirements into courses as applicable.
• Collaborate with workforce development and/or campus deans to provide credit or non‑credit courses, seminars, workshops, etc.
• Serve as a positive representative of the college, supporting institutional goals and initiatives.

Master’s degree in social work, counseling, alcohol‑drug counseling, psychology, or a related field with at least three years of clinical experience in the human services delivery field. Professional licensure (LSW, LPC, APA, WVCBAPP) preferred. Experience in college teaching, use of instructional technologies, and experience with distance education (Zoom, online formats) preferred.
