Position: Instructional Designer / Distance Education Coordinator

Provides instructional design support and consultation for faculty developing courses and interactive learning modules.

Works with faculty, particularly in technical fields, to design and revise curriculum in formats and modalities that meet the non‑traditional needs of students enrolled in technical and workforce programs. The Instructional Designer will assist faculty in identifying competencies and will guide the faculty in developing curriculum in alternative formats, including modularized instruction, and in appropriately incorporating instructional technology into courses and programs.

Additionally, the individual will provide training and workshops for faculty in these areas.

    Instructional Designer Exempt
Responsibilities
  • Support faculty in the design, development, and continuous improvement of courses, both online and face‑to‑face, by applying instructional design theory, pedagogy, and guiding instructional strategies, while incorporating accessibility and universal design principles in alignment with institutional quality standards.
  • Assist with LMS course development and management, including supporting course builds, facilitating course conversions across modalities, and ensuring courses are accessible and consistent within the LMS.
  • Design and deliver employee development opportunities, including workshops, individualized training, and curated resources, to support teaching practices and use of instructional technologies.
  • Provide support to employees in the use of the LMS and related instructional technologies, including troubleshooting, best practices, accessibility, and emerging tools that enhance teaching and learning.
  • Manage the Learning Management System (LMS), including system settings, course loading, template maintenance, and coordination with external partners such as the West Virginia Network (WVNET) and third‑party vendors.
  • Provide Tier 1 technical support for LMS users with system navigation, troubleshooting issues, and directing users to appropriate resources.
  • Serve as institutional lead for online quality assurance and Quality Matters Coordinator, maintaining QM Peer Reviewer status (or obtaining within 6 months), while overseeing faculty training, course reviews, and adherence to quality course design standards.
  • Collaborate with Academic Affairs and Student Services to ensure that student‑facing LMS supports (e.g., orientation materials, navigation consistency, and help resources) are accessible, consistent, and aligned with institutional goals.
  • Collaborate with institutional stakeholders to support strategic planning, policy development, and governance related to online learning and academic technology, including participation in relevant committees.
  • Collect, analyze, and report data to evaluate the effectiveness of learning initiatives and inform strategic decision‑making.
  • Serve as institutional contact for NC‑SARA and other external entities, ensuring compliance, reporting, and renewals.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in disciplinary required; master’s in Educational Technology, Instructional Design or related field preferred.
  • Post‑secondary teaching experience required.
  • Demonstrated expertise in instructional design theory, pedagogy, and in the development, delivery, and evaluation of online courses.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill with at least one learning management system (LMS), preferably D2L Brightspace, including course design, delivery, and system administration.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, management skills, and writing skills required.
