Duties- Perform technical and field inspections of regulated sites to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and permits.
- Travel to and inspect sites in Boone, Kanawha, Logan, and Mason counties; work in varying weather conditions, including rugged terrain.
- Issue notices of violations and cessation orders; initiate civil or administrative proceedings; pursue criminal prosecution per established procedures.
- Conduct complaint investigations related to the position.
- Participate in quarterly helicopter over‑flights of assigned areas.
- Submit documentation and required paperwork promptly.
- May be subject to emergency response, on‑call duties, and temporary assignments in different geographic areas as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of state and federal environmental protection laws and regulations related to surface mining or underground mining effects.
- Residency within the assigned geographical area.
- Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
- Strong oral and written communication skills for interactions with the public and private sector.
- Ability to maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a degree in natural or applied science, engineering, or occupational safety and health. Full‑time or part‑time paid inspection, technical, or professional employment in one of the assignment areas may substitute for the required training on a year‑to‑year basis.
Special Requirements- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- For work in hazardous waste management and solid waste management, must pass a physical examination within the first six months of employment and submit to annual follow‑up examinations. Failure to pass may result in termination or reassignment.

Maximum hiring salary for the Environmental Inspector in Training title is $45,500, with progression opportunities thereafter.
