Position: CRIME ANALYST (POLICE - CRIME ANALYSIS AND PROBLEM-SOLVING UNIT)

This employee performs professional level technical and analytical support in the daily operations of the Cincinnati Police Department. Employee assists all Department personnel in a timely manner in the collection, collation, analysis, and dissemination of the data collected including, but not limited to, crime, arrests, calls for service, and traffic data. Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge of:
  • City of Cincinnati and Police Department administrative regulations.
  • Business English; e.g. grammar, standard correspondence format, etc.
  • English usage; e.g. spelling, grammar, and punctuation proficiency.
  • Elements of report preparation.
  • Use of computers and related software in the performance of duties; e.g., word processing and spreadsheets including, but not limited to, MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, CAD, Mapinfo, Arcview, and GIS.
  • Basic principles and practices of mathematics and statistics.
  • Basic principles of quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • Pertinent city, state, and federal laws, regulation, and practices.
Skills to:
  • Operate a computer in performance of assigned duties.
  • Use computer software such as spreadsheets, word processing, graphical presentation, and statistical analysis.
  • Use software packages utilized by the City of Cincinnati and its Departments such as operating systems, Internet systems, electronic email systems, and Intranet systems.
  • Operate assigned motor vehicle as required.
Ability to:
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Interpret and apply Police Department policies and procedures.
  • Process complex information while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Work independently in the absence of direct supervision.
  • Research, analyze, and evaluate data for crime solutions and prevention.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Prioritize work and manage time to meet deadlines.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations of the City of Cincinnati and Police Department.
  • Identify and respond to issues, concerns, and needs.
  • Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, and project consequences of proposed actions.
  • Make and communicate decisions based on data analysis and observation.
  • Perform analyses of problems related to assigned area of responsibility.
  • Formulate solutions to problems related to assigned area of responsibility.
  • Interpret and draw logical conclusions from cartographic, business, and public administrative data (e.g. crime statistics).
  • Maintain confidentiality of City, Department, and employee information.

Each applicant must have a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Police Science, Public Administration, Computer Sciences, Mathematics, Statistical Analysis, Information Management, or a related field. Additionally, each applicant must have one year of prior work experience in crime analysis/research and/or intelligence analysis/research

Experience may include teaching and/or research as a paid/unpaid graduate assistant. A Master's Degree in a related field may substitute for one year's work experience.

Must have an Associate's Degree in any of the above fields plus three years of experience in crime analysis/research and/or intelligence analysis/research.

Must have certificates of completion, certification, and/or documented training classes directly related to crime analysis/research plus five years of experience in crime analysis/research and/or intelligence analysis/research.

Other Requirements
  • Must have a valid Driver's License.
  • Must be proficient with computer usage.
  • Must be willing to submit to a police background investigation due to the sensitive nature of the work
  • Must be able to obtain certification to gain access to NCIC, LEADS, and RCIC (nation, state, and regional crime systems).
Military Education & Experience Evaluation

Military education and experience may be substituted for college level course work at the lower and upper division baccalaureate and graduate levels and apprenticeship training at the vocational certificate level on a case by case basis based on the American Council on Education (ACE) Military Guide recommendations.

Environmental Conditions

Mostly indoor; exposure to office computer screens; automobile travel may be required.

Physical Conditions

Duties require maintaining physical conditioning necessary for sitting and standing for prolonged time periods; light lifting and carrying; general manual dexterity required; must be able to operate assigned vehicle if required.
