Responsibilities- Applies principles of nutrition in monitoring nutritional status of hospital patients. Assures that appropriate nutrition intervention occurs. Approves definitions of modified diets and patient menus as prescribed by the Medical Staff for patients with therapeutic diet needs. Provides instructions concerning therapeutic diets for patients and family.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Other duties may be assigned.- Observes for physical signs of nutritional deficiency per standard of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
- Evaluates anthropometric data for height and weight and changes in height and weight.
- Obtains and evaluates diet history information for nutritional significance, including appetite and intake, food allergies or intolerances, chewing or swallowing difficulties, feeding independence, supplements, eating patterns, and estimate of daily intake.
- Completes physician-ordered consults and instructions according to standards of care; documents in medical record and contacts the physician regarding concerns or recommendations.
- Documents NPO/Clear Liquid notes daily and follows up until nutrition is provided, as indicated.
- Completes and documents calorie counts accurately; summarizes calorie counts within 24 hours if results warrant nutritional recommendations.
- Calculates and reports nitrogen balance and metabolic cart study results in a timely manner.
- Completes and documents nutrition assessments on high-risk patients, including diet appropriateness, tube feeding adequacy, infant formula, laboratory values, drug-nutrient interactions, medical history, nutrition needs, education needs, and care plan.
- Instructs patients and family members on home diets, tailoring teaching to patient needs and following up before discharge when possible.
- Attends physician-requested meetings or meetings required to maintain accreditation or foster partnerships with other facilities.
- Addresses patient food complaints with appropriate alternatives and follows up with managers on food quality issues.
- Education, Certification, and/or Licensure: Registration eligible to be a Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
- Must possess current licensure as required by the state board where services will be provided.
- WV: Provisional Permit OR Licensed Dietitian through the West Virginia Board of Licensed Dietitians. If applicant is hired with a provisional permit, must obtain permanent licensure within three (3) years of the issue date.
- Experience - Preferred Qualifications: Completion of a dietetic internship.
- Must have ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Must have basic math skills including addition and subtraction.
- Basic computer skills required.
- Concentrated mental activity is required to organize the work.
- Must be able to respond to changes in work volume throughout the shift.
- Must be able to work Saturdays and some holidays; may need to attend an evening meeting on occasion.
- Must be able to interact with co-workers, patients, family and other members of the medical team in a positive manner.
