Position: APP- Pulmonary Consultation (Inpatient)

Position Summary

The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) will practice at Wheeling Hospital in Wheeling, WV, providing comprehensive inpatient pulmonary consultations and outpatient follow‑up. The APP coordinates medical specialty teams, performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and manages discharge planning. The APP also educates residents, medical and nursing students, and provides leadership in pulmonary care improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage comprehensive and individualized care for pulmonary patients across inpatient and ambulatory settings.
  • Complete daily rounds, consults, and pre‑procedure evaluations.
  • Perform integrated assessments and order necessary tests or consults per established protocols.
  • Conduct and interpret diagnostic tests, communicate results, and document findings in the medical record.
  • Facilitate patient discharge by coordinating services and appointments; provide necessary referrals.
  • Develop individualized plans of care, including teaching, discharge planning, and ambulatory follow‑up.
  • Identify unstable or complex patient situations and initiate appropriate interventions.
  • Recognize emergency situations and execute effective emergency care.
  • Serve as a resource for staff caring for pulmonary patients and provide educational programs to professionals and paraprofessionals.
  • Participate in community programs, literature distribution, and research studies.
  • Collaborate with other leaders to achieve patient outcome improvements and implement changes in pulmonary practice.
  • Maintain and update own knowledge base throughout the year.
  • Perform documentation of care, interventions, and evaluations in compliance with hospital policies.
  • Record hours and submit billing reports when applicable.
  • Assist in analyzing pulmonary data and recommend changes as needed.
  • Participate and lead inter‑disciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education.
  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications – Nurse Practitioner
  • Graduate of a CCNE‑accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
  • National APRN certification from a recognized certification centre.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
  • BLS certification required; additional advanced life‑support training at the department’s discretion.
  • Pulmonary or acute‑care experience preferred; newly graduated NPs considered.
Minimum Qualifications – Physician Assistant
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an ARC‑PA approved PA training program.
  • National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants certification required.
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine.
  • BLS certification required; additional advanced life‑support training at the department’s discretion.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • ACNP or FNP certification considered.
Physical Requirements

Heavy/Hard Work: lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning of patients, materials, and equipment; carrying weights up to 40+ pounds. The role requires strength, stamina, standing, walking, and carrying of patients and equipment.

Working Environment
  • Proximity to colleagues and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Protracted or irregular hours.
  • Exposure to biohazards and infectious diseases.
  • Exposure to deceased patients.
  • Work with hands in water and around electrical hazards from patient‑care equipment.
