How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare
The Emergency Medical Technician administers basic life support care and transports patients in pre‑hospital settings as authorized by a physician.
Responsibilities include:
- Responding to medical emergencies in a 911 setting and providing cardiac and trauma support when necessary.
- Administering initial treatment at the emergency scene, assessing patient response, and adjusting care as needed.
- Gathering and analyzing information, using sound judgment with emotional topics, and managing difficult customer situations while maintaining confidentiality.
- Performing EMT‑Basic procedures such as extrication of patients, defibrillation, and non‑invasive treatments.
- Administering medications and initiating basic level treatments.
- Observing, recording, and reporting patient condition and reactions to drugs and treatments to physicians or command center personnel.
- Utilizing excellent communication skills with staff, peers, patients, and families in diverse situations.
- Keeping current on treatment techniques, protocol changes, and new drugs, material, and equipment.
- Coordinating activities with external entities when needed and preparing required reports.
- Maintaining records for insurance billing, understanding covered and non‑covered charges for ambulance services, and following billing guidelines.
- Maintaining knowledge of state and federal laws, agency protocols, Carilion policies, and safety procedures.
- Maintaining continuing education requirements set by national, state, and Carilion standards.
- Transporting patients to hospitals and non‑hospital sites while observing safety guidelines.
- Maintaining an excellent driving record and operating the vehicle to the emergency scene.
- Managing cost efficiency, inventory, and reporting any vehicle malfunctions to the in‑house mechanic.
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Certified as an Emergency Medical Technician in the State of Virginia.
- AHA BLS – HCP certification required.
- HAZMAT awareness and PHTLS or BTLS Basic certified within one year of hire date.
- Submission of a current driving record and meeting eligibility requirements.
- Completion of continuing education hours to meet recertification status as required by state and national standards.
$20.10 – $28.14 per hour, based on qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The range does not include benefits or pension plans.
