The Paramedic administers life support care and transports patients in pre‑hospital settings as authorized and directed by physicians. They perform a variety of skills related to acute and non‑acute settings in ground and/or air transport, respond to medical emergencies in a 911 setting, protect life, and provide cardiac and trauma support when needed. They administer initial treatment at the emergency scene, assess patient response, and make adjustments as needed.
The Paramedic gathers and analyzes information, uses reasoning when dealing with emotional topics, manages difficult customer situations, and maintains confidentiality.
- Restores and stabilizes heart rhythm on pulseless, non‑breathing patients.
- Initiates IV drugs, administers medications, and replaces fluids.
- Performs emergency procedures such as extrication, intubation, defibrillation, and operates under ACLS protocol.
- Administers injections, initiates invasive and non‑invasive treatments at an advanced level; treats life‑threatening arrhythmias, respiratory compromise, shock, and trauma, specializing in pediatric care.
- Observes, records, and reports patient condition and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents.
- Maintains current knowledge of treatment techniques, protocol changes, and application of new drugs, materials, and equipment.
- Takes responsibility for own actions and those of support team members.
- Prepares required reports and maintains records of activities.
- Obtains patient information needed for insurance billings and has knowledge of covered and non‑covered charges as they pertain to ambulance services and insurance guidelines.
- Coordinates activities with external entities if needed.
- Checks daily units assigned, cleans and stocks supplies, and reports any malfunctions to the in‑house mechanic.
- Maintains supplies and uses resources appropriately.
- Transports patients to hospital and non‑hospital sites observing safety guidelines.
High school graduate or equivalent required.
ExperienceNo experience required.
Licensure/Certification- Must be certified as a Paramedic in the state of Virginia or eligible for reciprocity.
- AHA BLS-HCP required at time of hire.
- ACLS, PALS, Haz Mat Awareness, NRP, and PHTLS or BTLS required within one year from date of hire.
- Maintains advanced transport medical knowledge and abilities.
- Maintains an excellent driving record and may operate vehicle to emergency scene.
- Must maintain continuing education hours to meet re‑certification status as required by state and national standards.
- Provides current driving record and meets driver eligibility requirements for all driver positions.
- Utilizes excellent communication skills in dealing with staff, peers, patients and family members in diverse situations.
- Writes clearly and presents numerical data/patient reports effectively.
- Maintains knowledge of basic computer skills and applicable software.
$25.77 – $38.66. Employee pay is based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
