The West Virginia Stream Partners Program works to support local watershed associations and protect the state’s extensive network of streams and rivers through community-driven conservation. In partnership with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP), we provide technical assistance, funding support, and capacity-building to strengthen over 30 watershed organizations across the state. Our work centers on improving water quality, restoring habitat, and enhancing the communities connected to these waterways.
This position is based in Romney, West Virginia, in the scenic Appalachian region known for its mountain landscapes, outdoor recreation, and close-knit communities. West Virginia is home to more than 10,000 named streams and 46 rivers, offering a unique setting for hands‑on environmental and community‑based work. Members will build capacity at a local watershed association by developing volunteer systems, creating an outreach strategy for staff implementation and building program systems for projects focused on restoration, education, recreation, and community revitalization.
Responsibilities also include identifying funding and resource opportunities. We are seeking individuals who are adaptable, community-oriented, and interested in environmental stewardship. Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills are essential. This project runs from August 2026 to August 2027; please contact Stewards Individual Placements for current timelines and application details. Candidates relocating should expect a rural setting with strong community connections and access to outdoor activities.
Description of Duties:
- Identify community assets that projects can be built around to enhance community and watershed.
- Promote existing watershed associations’ success stories through developing an outreach plan for staff to implement.
- Prepare grant applications for staff submission to enhance a priority community asset.
- Develop an outreach plan to facilitate a Project Team for a successful project to increase organizational capacity and enhance environmental stewardship and community revitalization in WV.
- Celebrate success by developing materials for planning events and a volunteer recognition program.
- Create a database for staff to identify new organizations that could benefit from the project partnership.
- Develop communication outreach materials for staff to promote local businesses and nonprofits as a project partner and invest project funding to support their needs.
