Description:
The unit consists of 30 beds, including private and semi-private rooms. The goal for nurse-to-patient ratios is 1:4; however, it often runs 1:5 and may occasionally reach 1:6. Charge nurses take a full patient assignment on both day and night shifts. A Clinical Assistant works alongside the nursing staff, with a combination of shifts covering patient care and office responsibilities. Typically, there are 2-3 Certified Nursing Assistants to support patient care with ratios of 1:10-12.
Weekend shifts include three-day shifts or three-night shifts based on the schedule. Traveling staff must be flexible regarding holiday coverage, although they are not usually required to work many holidays. The scrub color required is navy blue for tops, bottoms, and jackets, with no hoodies allowed. Nurses must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips as they have Tele Techs available.
RNs are required to titrate medications such as Amiodarone, Cardizem, and others, and may manage patients on specific therapies. Respiratory therapy equipment is managed by trained specialists who are in-house 24/7. Medical staff availability includes hospitalists and specialists around the clock. An IV team is accessible 24/7 for support and assistance with intravenous care. Shifts begin promptly, and self-scheduling is permitted as long as unit needs are met.
All nursing staff may be required to float to other units as necessary, supporting patient care where needed. New hires will spend time with a preceptor for training in unit protocols and procedures. Common patient diagnoses include chest pain, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, and various post-procedural cares. A strict attendance policy is in place, requiring timely notification of any shift changes or emergencies.
The charting system used in this unit is EPIC.
