Account Representative – 50% Travel Required

This position will coordinate all direct sales activities relative to existing and prospective accounts found within the assigned area of responsibility. The role involves making regular contact with existing accounts and prospects, performing discovery, increasing understanding of the customer/prospect business model, and learning what would qualify as true value offerings. Utilizing Sonoco resources, the representative brings forth those value offerings to the customer or prospect, focusing on increased profitable sales growth with new and existing accounts to increase our market share and enhance Sonoco’s overall position in all served and potential markets.

The position may also require acting as National Manager for specific accounts that span regions. In that capacity, the representative coordinates the activities of multiple location accounts through local Sonoco representatives, ensuring clear communication and a measurable path to profitable sales growth.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Prepare and maintain updated account plans for major accounts and prospective accounts within the assigned area.
  • Provide marketing with input for developing strategic plans and develop account plans consistent with overall division strategies.
  • Implement and coordinate activities relative to each account plan and monitor each plan for effectiveness.
  • Provide progress reports covering each account plan to appropriate personnel on a regular basis.
  • Establish and monitor a call plan for all customers and prospective customers and implement changes as required.
  • Monitor activity at each customer and prospective customer location and report on expansions, closings, business trends, and all other factors impacting volume levels.
  • Maintain detailed customer files (share, relative quality, relative price, specifications, contacts, competitor, etc.) on an ongoing basis.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date information on gross margins for all major accounts and make pricing recommendations as appropriate.
  • Establish and maintain multi‑level contacts at all major existing and prospective accounts.
  • Communicate all pertinent information involving assigned accounts and prospective accounts to appropriate personnel through call reports.
  • Seek out and promote new product and service offerings, new uses for existing product lines, and potential candidates for acquisition.
  • Develop and maintain territory sales funnel for prospective new business.
  • Provide immediate supervisor with sales projections for products and customers within the assigned area for use in developing sales budgets.
  • Investigate promptly and accurately customer complaints and coordinate their resolution to the complete satisfaction of these accounts.
  • Assist division marketing with trade shows, conventions, and trade association meetings as requested.
  • Stay abreast of current selling techniques and make continuous efforts to improve product knowledge and marketplace knowledge.
  • Champion new products and services as requested for the region and/or division.
  • Submit expense reports, call reports, itineraries on a weekly basis and all other reports on schedule.
  • Promote company goodwill and maintain proper relationships with customers and prospective customers.
  • Protect assets, confidential and restricted information, developments, specifications, materials, legal obligations and other such data in contacts with external parties.
