Utility Worker
Definition:
Under supervision of a Superintendent, Division Supervisor, or lead worker, installs, repairs and maintains utility (water or sewer) lines.
General:
Performs general laborer duties associated with the installation, repair and maintenance of sewer or water lines. Responds to customer complaints. Maintains proper safety equipment at work site. Investigates, isolates and repairs leaks. Restores job site to original status by replacing surface. May cut weeds or shovel snow. May drive trucks to work sites. Performs other duties as assigned.
Duties specific to Water:
Check booster station to maintain appropriate water levels. Install, repair and pretest water meters. Make water taps. Locate, repair and replace water valves. Install and repair fire hydrants. May collect chlorine and bacteria samples for processing.
- Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair and maintenance area of assignment.
- Knowledge of occupational safety precautions.
- Knowledge of the uses and purposes of utility tools and equipment.
- Skill in the use and interpretation of utility maps.
- Skill in use of appropriate equipment, tools and devices.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with city staff and the public.
- Skill in performing heavy manual labor.
- Skill in learning specific tasks and duties through on-the-job training.
- Skill in following simple oral and/or written instructions.
- Skill in using proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
- Skill in identifying the equipment needs for each assigned project.
- Utility truck
- Power Tools:
Jackhammer, saws, pumps, generators, compressors, etc. - Hand Tools: wrenches, hammer, shovel, etc.
- Ability to follow written and oral instruction, which could have an impact on safety of self and others.
- Lifting (50-80 lbs) occasionally; lifting and moving moderate (25-50 lbs) materials frequently.
- Climb in and out of holes and trenches, work in confined spaces.
- Walk on uneven surfaces in and around construction sites.
- Bend, stoop, and twist while performing daily duties.
Work involves exposure to dust, weather conditions, and hazardous conditions such as buried electrical lines, natural gas lines, raw sewage, chemicals, moving mechanical parts, and exposure to loud machinery.
QualificationsHigh School Diploma or GED and two (2) years of physical laborer experience. Experience in assignment is preferred. Must possess a valid driver’s license; however, a commercial driver’s license (CDL) is preferred. May be required to secure certification specific to area of assignment.
Special QualificationsMay be on-call for (24) hour service.
