Mechanic Assistant

General

Summary:

Personnel employed as a mechanic apprentice and helper. The role provides basic support in inspection, maintenance, and repair of school buses and district vehicles.

Mechanic

  • Experience performing complex repairs and leading work assignments.

General

Summary:

Personnel employed to be responsible for directing activities that ensure student transportation and other county board‑owned vehicles are properly and safely maintained.

  • Extensive experience in fleet maintenance and repair.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of transportation regulations and safety standards.
  • Ability to manage maintenance operations and personnel.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Thoroughly inspect all new, used, or recently serviced vehicles and equipment to ensure safe operating condition.
  • Service and repair vehicles and equipment as requested by drivers and equipment operators.
  • Install accessories (lights, cell phones, TV cameras, etc.).
  • Clean engines and parts using proper methods and materials.
  • Rebuild, replace, or repair gas, diesel, or propane engines, if practical.
  • Align front and rear wheels of vehicles.
  • Inspect tires for wear, pattern, and damage; repair or replace tires as needed.
  • Inspect steering and suspension systems; repair or replace worn or broken parts.
  • Diagnose emission control and ignition problems; repair or replace components.
  • Diagnose fuel system problems (injectors, pumps, fuel lines, filters); repair or replace as needed.
  • Inspect exhaust systems for leaks and restrictions; replace components.
  • Repair, replace turbochargers.
  • Test and repair or replace charging system components.
  • Replace or repair automatic and manual transmissions.
  • Inspect and replace or repair driveline components.
  • Test and repair or replace starter system components, including batteries.
  • Check all circuit breakers and fuses; replace as needed.
  • Repair or replace primary electrical components.
  • Install body parts on vehicles (doors, windows, steps, seats, bumpers, mirrors, etc.).
  • Lubricate all vehicles according to the schedule.
  • Check all fluid levels regularly.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working area.
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on all vehicles and mechanical equipment.
  • Familiar with high‑voltage circuit safety on electric buses.
  • Keep an up‑to‑date log of all vehicle repairs and maintenance.
  • Attend workshops to keep current on service and repair of vehicles.
  • Maintain an operating inventory of parts and materials needed for routine repairs.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
  • Apply safety principles throughout work operations.
  • CDL with Class B and passenger (P) endorsement required or must be obtained within one year of hire.
  • Work may involve hazardous materials such as gasoline, diesel, propane, etc.
  • Noise level moderate to loud due to power tools and equipment.
  • Physical requirements:
