OverviewUnder immediate supervision – perform varied manual semi‑skilled and skilled tasks in building, electrical, and mechanical trades for construction, maintenance, and repair of school buildings and equipment. Responsible for carpentry tasks assigned by the supervisor and may be utilized for general maintenance projects or emergency situations as required.
Duties and Responsibilities- Adhere to WVBE Policy 5902 – Employee Code of Conduct and applicable WVSDB personnel policies.
- Observe safety precautions while carrying out assigned duties.
- Demonstrate appropriate safety, hygiene, and health standards.
- Maintain safety of the work area.
- Operate communication devices with established notification procedures.
- Attend staff meetings as scheduled.
- Perform preventive maintenance and routine repairs to all campus buildings.
- Have knowledge of required tools.
- Estimate materials.
- Write reports and complete work orders consistently with duties.
- Make renovations and new installations requiring high‑level carpentry skills.
- Read, interpret, and work from blueprints, plans, and sketches.
- Plan, initiate, and carry to completion specialized phases of general maintenance work.
- Coordinate work with others.
- Perform duties in full compliance with state and county requirements.
- Apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- Conduct inventory of building supplies and materials; submit requests based on this inventory.
- Conduct shop operations, including receiving parts and supplies and completing work orders.
- Effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff, the general public, and inspectors.
- Work individually or as a team member on other projects.
- Be willing to be called out in emergency situations for each classification held.
- Install and finish drywall and other routine maintenance or repair tasks.
- Construct wooden cabinets, shelving units, and furniture from start to finish, including:
- Reading and interpreting blueprints and shop drawings.
- Designing cabinets, shelving units, and furniture when required.
- Drawing and sketching shop drawings.
- Selecting proper grades of lumber, plywood, and other materials.
- Layout, cutting, and assembling units using the best available methods.
- Finishing all units including sanding and applying finish coats (paints, stains, varnishes, lacquers, oils, polyurethanes).
- Install and/or modify drop ceilings or other commercial ceiling systems.
- Finish work for assigned projects, including moldings and trim.
- Install various finishing and surfacing materials.
- Install rough framing, roof components, exterior finishes, interior finishes.
- Hang doors, install closures, locks, and panic hardware.
- Use climbing equipment.
- Sharpen tools.
- Load and unload trucks; move or haul supplies, office furniture, and building materials.
- Maintain and care for campus grounds, ensuring they are safe and attractive.
- Prune trees and trim hedges.
- Mow lawns with hand or power mower.
- Adjust and repair lawnmowers, sprinklers, and hedge shears.
- Shovel snow from sidewalks and driveways; spread sand, salt, or ashes to prevent slipping.
- Collect and dispose of leaves and refuse.
- Assist custodians with keeping the ground free of rubbish and tall grass for a safe and attractive condition.
- Store supplies and equipment.
- Assist in inspecting facilities regularly for preventive maintenance and correcting safety hazards.
- Assist with snow and ice removal operations on roadways and sidewalks, including call‑outs after normal working hours as available.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or superintendent.
- High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5.
- Meet the definition of "Qualifications" in WV Code §18A-4-8b; demonstrate competency through state‑approved competency test as required.
- Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10.
