Job Summary

Personnel employed to perform duties of painting, finishing, and decorating of wood, metal, and concrete surfaces of buildings, other structures, equipment, machinery, and furnishings of a county school system.

Salary and Benefits

Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm through August 7, 2026. Pay Grade

E. Daily rate plus competitive benefits package equal to approximately 35% of direct compensation. Holidays are non-paid.

Classification and Reporting

Classification:
Service. Reports to Director of Maintenance/Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent. Evaluation:
Evaluated annually by the building principal/immediate supervisor in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5314, and NCBOE Policy 4220. FLSA Status:
Non-Exempt.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma, General Equivalent Development Certificate (GED) per West Virginia Code §18A-2-5
  • Personnel must be or have been classified in this category, or must pass the state prescribed exam for this position per West Virginia Code §18A-4-8e
  • Criminal background check per WV Code §18-5-15c
  • The ability to perform the job duties and responsibilities of the position as contained in the Job Description
Responsibilities
  • Comply with shop and equipment safety rules and correct safety hazards.
  • Demonstrate knowledge about CPR and basic first aid and complete accident reports as necessary.
  • Inspect workplaces for safe working environment.
  • Demonstrate use of fire extinguishers.
  • Participate in safety training programs.
  • Clean and maintain work area and equipment.
  • Follow tool crib procedures.
  • Determine maintenance procedures using manual and technical references.
  • Plan sequence of work operations.
  • Maintain records of service tools and equipment.
  • Requisition, receive, inventory, and store supplies.
  • Create material lists, work orders, and job status reports.
  • Estimate materials needed to complete jobs.
  • Inspect climbing equipment for safety.
  • Construct and/or erect ladders, ladder jacks, planks, and scaffolding.
  • Prepare surfaces for painting and apply primer as needed.
  • Prepare wood, concrete, metal, gypsum, and plaster surfaces for finishing.
  • Lubricate compressors and adjust air regulators.
  • Select and use air and fluid hoses.
  • Apply paint with conventional and/or airless spray gun.
  • Select and use respirators.
  • Select proper paint/coating for application.
  • Clean surfaces using paint removal tools and sandpaper and fill holes and cracks.
  • Paint and/or repaint plaster, wall/ceiling, concrete, and metal surfaces.
  • Seal, paint, or stain uncoated wood surfaces.
  • Apply varnish, shellac, or lacquer to wood surfaces.
  • Apply latex paints and/or oil-based industrial grade paints/coatings.
  • Repair cracks, alligatoring, checkering, blistering, and peeling/flanking.
  • Remove mildew.
  • Repair nail head stains, and peeling /flaking on metal gutters.
  • Repair flaking and caulk masonry.
  • Apply protective wall coverings below grade.
  • Refinish woodwork, concrete, and metal.
  • This position may work around hazardous materials such as paint, paint thinner, etc.
  • Specific vision abilities required including close, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Performs other duties assigned by principal/immediate supervisor or superintendent of schools.
Physical Requirements
  • Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and push and/or pull 50-pound loads at a time.
  • Must be able to stand and walk up to eight hours per day.
  • May occasionally be required to bend or twist at the neck and/or trunk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.
