Description• Interprets basic drawings, sketches, or verbal instructions to determine project requirements
• Fabricates frames, supports, and related components for equipment using light structural steel and steel plate.
• Selects appropriate materials, lays out work, and cuts metal to specified sizes or shapes using oxy-acetylene or electric arc methods.
• Positions materials accurately for welding and performs welds in all positions, across all types of metals, and with rods of varying sizes, ensuring strength, precision, and compliance with safety standards.
• May construct smaller or more complex components using traditional blacksmithing methods, employing tools such as the forge, anvil, and heavy sledges.
• Applies heat treatment techniques to temper and shape small tools and parts, ensuring durability, precision, and functionality.
• Performs varied, non-repetitive welding and fabrication tasks, working primarily within a designated area but occasionally repairing or assembling components at the equipment's final location.
• May be required to work in awkward positions to complete assignments.
• Adheres to strict safety practices, including the use of heavy protective gloves and a welder's mask during welding and cutting operations.
• Responsible for the proper care, safe operation, and routine maintenance of welding equipment, including a 440-volt welding transformer on wheels, welding rods, portable oxy- acetylene equipment, clamps, and related tools. Ensures all equipment is maintained in optimal working condition, adheres to safety standards, and is readily available for use in fabrication and repair tasks.
• May assist as a millwright helper or general maintenance helper when required, supporting broader facility repair and upkeep activities.
• Maintains a clean and organized work area to ensure safety, efficiency, and readiness for ongoing tasks.
• Frequently assists skilled tradespeople—including machinists, millwrights, electricians, plumbers, and other craftsmen—in the repair and installation of machinery and equipment.
• Provides hands-on support during projects, ensures the work area is properly cleaned after tasks are completed, and delivers additional services as needed to facilitate efficient operations and teamwork
• Applies tools and techniques from multiple trades to support maintenance and repair activities, demonstrating versatility across disciplines. While not a fully skilled craftsman in any single trade, effectively performs semiskilled tasks that contribute to the upkeep, functionality, and efficiency of factory buildings, machinery, and equipment.
• Carry out tasks such as repairing brickwork, mixing and applying cement, glazing windows, minor carpentry, electrical work, lacing belts and mechanics.
• Occasionally cleans roof and waterspouts, remove rubbish, mend caulking, and make minor repairs to machinery, equipment, or buildings.
• It may be necessary for the selected employee to pursue specialized courses or additional training to augment existing skills.
