Job Overview

General Maintenance/HVAC Technician – 260 days

Position Type: Service

Administrative Unit: West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB)

Location: Romney, West Virginia

Under immediate supervision, the General Maintenance/HVAC Technician performs tasks including installing, maintaining, repairing, or upgrading heating and air conditioning systems in schools and campus buildings; procuring parts and materials; and maintaining records of time and materials.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Will adhere to WVDE Policy 5902 – "Employee Code of Conduct" and applicable WVSDB personnel policies for employee performance.
  • Observes safety precautions in carrying out assigned duties.
  • Carries and operates communication devices with established notification procedures, as requested.
  • Responsible for installation, repair and maintenance of campus heating and air conditioning units and related electrical equipment.
  • Estimates time and materials for heating and air conditioning projects.
  • Conducts inventory of air conditioning, plumbing, and electrical materials, supplies and equipment; submits reports/requests based on inventory records.
  • Serves as a crew chief for specific projects, working individually or as a team member for other projects.
  • Performs general maintenance tasks when HVAC assignments are completed or on hold due to unforeseen circumstances.
  • Responds to emergency situations for safety concerns.
  • Transports various items (e.g., tools, equipment, supplies) to ensure availability of materials at job sites.
  • Performs grounds maintenance or other general maintenance duties when assigned:
    • Assists with snow and ice removal operations on roadways and sidewalks, including callouts after normal working hours.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor and/or superintendent.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent (per WV Code §18A-2-5).
  • Current license for a certified HVAC Technician in West Virginia.
  • Certificate of training related to use of air conditioning refrigerants (Clean Air Act 1990, Section 608).
  • Demonstrated competency per state‑approved competency test (WV Code §18A-4-8b).
  • Successful completion of criminal background check (WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10).
  • Demonstrated experience and/or training in any of the job classifications listed.
  • Valid state‑issued motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Physically able to perform heavy, extensive lifting and manual labor.
  • Must hold, or be able to obtain, licensures required by state or federal agencies.
  • ASL skill level as required by WVSDB Communication Policy.
Physical Demands

The role requires frequent reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, writing, talking, hearing, seeing, and use of technology. Responsibilities include lifting and/or moving 50–100 pounds. The employee must remain free of alcohol or non‑prescribed drugs while in the workplace.

Compensation and Benefits

Based on WVSDB Service Personnel Pay Schedule, H Scale, commensurate with years of experience. 260‑day annual contract. Full benefits package available.

Evaluation

Performance evaluation per West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5314.
